A Resurvey Of The Hampton Roads Corridor Adjacent To The Proposed Site Of The I-664 Bridge-Tunnel, Dexter S. Haven, Lowell W. Fritz
Reports
On 5 September 1980 a survey was conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) on Melzer's leased bottom (48.37 acres) off Newport News Point, Virginia (Figure 1). The study was done at the request of the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation, Suffolk, Virginia in relation to the construction of I-664, Projects 0664-121-102, RW-201 and 0664-061-102, RW-201. The objective of this study was to determine the extent and value of the molluscan resource on Melzer's lease prior to construction activity. A second study would examine the area after the bridge-tunnel is completed.

New Species And A Review Of The Deep-Sea Fish Genus Asquamiceps (Salmoniformes, Alepocephalidae), Df Markle
New Species And A Review Of The Deep-Sea Fish Genus Asquamiceps (Salmoniformes, Alepocephalidae), Df Markle
VIMS Articles
A new species of Asqllamiceps with a striking cobalt blue head is described from specimens collected at bathypelagic (ca. 2,000 m) depths in the Atlantic Ocean. The new species is compared to the five nominal species in the genus and a key to Asqllamiceps is presented. One nominal species. A. indagatio, is treated as a junior synonym of A. velaris. The anatomy of A. caerlilells suggests a relatively primitive grade within the family. The caudal skeleton, with two to four ural centra, four uroneurals, and the distal edge of the lower hypurals ahead of the distal edge of the upper …

A Review Of Introductions Of Exotic Oysters And Biological Planning For New Importations, Jay D. Andrews
A Review Of Introductions Of Exotic Oysters And Biological Planning For New Importations, Jay D. Andrews
VIMS Articles
Importation and transplantation of exotic oysters has probably resulted in the introduction into new areas of more marine invertebrate species than any other of man's activities. Unintentional introductions have resulted from careless movements of oysters without planning or consideration of consequences.

Effects Of Large Predators On The Field Culture Of The Hard Clam, Mercenaria Mercenaria, Jn Kraeuter, M Castagna
VIMS Articles
Individuals in the clam industry h ave used fences to keep the cownose ray, Rhirioptera bonasus, out of planted areas (Lewis 2 ; Burton3 ). Tiller et al. ( 1952) indicated losses due to skates in planted holding areas and stated that "One man reported the loss of 600 bushels of small clams in two nights during 1948 .... " Merriner and Smith4 stated that cownose ray predation is a serious problem on oyster and clam grounds in Chesapeake Bay. From these observations it is clear that such large predators could be a significant deterrent to the culture of clams …

James River Finfish Biomass Study, Frank Wojick
Reports
Kepone studies at VIMS and elsewhere are addressing the distribution of Kepone in the James River and its concentration in the various trophic levels. This report provides estimates of biomass for finfish in the lower James River, from the mouth to mile 85 (close to Richmond). Companion reports will provide data for shellfish and crustacean biomass in the same area.

Biology And Management Of The American Lobster : June 1974 - December 1978, Robert E. Harris, W. A. Van Engel
Reports
From June 1974 through October 1976, fourteen cruises were made on connnercial lobster trapping vessels off the mid-Atlantic coast. Catch per effort data were collected from 2308 traps, carapace size frequency distributions were formed and analyzed from measurements of over 3300 lobsters and information on quality was obtained from 5487 lobsters. Total catch per trap-haul (CTH) ranged from 0.64 lobsters in January 1976 to 4.5 lobsters in July 1976. (...more...)

The Virginian Sea Bibliography, Thomas M. Armitage, William J. Hargis Jr.
Reports
The bibliography of the Virginian Sea is a compendium of literature and environmental data concerning the Middle Atlantic Bight region of the Western North Atlantic - or the United States east coast. The geographical coverage of this bibliography ineludes that region extending from 41° N latitude to 36° N latitude and out 200 miles from the coastal headlands. This volume represents the first step of an effort undertaken by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to assess the present status of knowledge concerning the physical and chemical environment, biology, and fisheries of the Virginian Sea. We do not put forth …

Fishing Gear Statistics Of Virginia 1929-1977, W. J. Hoagman, J. C. Siefert
Reports
The commercial fishery of Virginia uses over 30 gear types to capture the species in this report. We have selected 19 gears for illustration and description, and 10 species for detailed analysis. The species selected for analysis were chosen from the list of 18 presented in Hoagman and Rathbone (1980) which provided landings and value information Statewide and for the James, York, and Rappahannock Rivers 1955- 77. The gear statistics provided here cover 1929-77, but the rivers are not treated separately \ The river data has been incorporated into the statistics reported a Virginia Totals and Averages. The National Marine …
