Soy-based products are known to pose a viable risk to US swine herds because of their ability to harbor and transmit virus. This study evaluated soy imports into the US as a whole and from foreign animal disease positive (FAD+) countries to determine which products are being imported in the highest quantities and observe potential trends in imports from FAD+ countries. Import data were accessed through the United States International Trade Commission website (USITC DataWeb) and summarized using R (version 4.0.2, R core team, Vienna, Austria). A total of 786 pigs (PIC TR4 × (Fast LW × PIC L02); initially 213.2 lb ± 2.37 lb) were used to evaluate the effects of increasing soybean meal (SBM) in corn-wheat middsbased diets on growth performance of late finishing pigs. Pens of pigs were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to 1 of 5 treatments with 9 replications per treatment. Experimental diets were corn-based with 30% wheat midds. A total of 1,827 pigs (L337 × 1050, PIC; initially 215.8 ± 2.5 lb) were used to evaluate the effects of increasing soybean meal (SBM) in corn-DDGS-based diets on growth performance of late finishing pigs. Pens were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to 1 of 5 dietary treatments with 14 replications per treatment. Experimental diets were corn-based with 25% DDGS. Solvent-extracted soybean meal (SSBM) is typically used as the primary protein source in swine diets in the United States. Mechanically extracted or expelled soybean meal (MSBM) typically has increased concentrations of fat and decreased concentrations of essential AA compared to SSBM, but MSBM has been demonstrated to have improved AA digestibility. A total of 1,793 pigs (L337 × 1050, PIC, Hendersonville, TN; initially 231.2 ± 2.4 lb) were used to evaluate the effects of increasing soybean meal in corn-based diets on growth performance of late finishing pigs. Pens of pigs were blocked by initial weight and randomly assigned to 1 of 5 dietary treatments with 22 to 27 pigs per pen and 12 to 14 pens per treatment. At hatch, 240 male broilers (Ross 308, Aviagen, Sallisaw, OK) were placed in batteries (Petersime Brood Unit, Gettysburg, OH) for a 15-d study to evaluate amino acid digestibility of soybean meal (SBM) from specialty variety soybeans grown in South Carolina. There were 10 replicates per treatment and 6 broilers per cage. Broilers were given a common corn and soybean meal-based diet from d 0 to 9.
