Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Neutrophil granulocytes are one of the most important defenders of the innate immune system in the host. Moreover, neutrophils are able to reach the inflammation area and kill the pathogens using various defense strategies including neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). However, there is still not enough information available regarding the innate immunity against Toxoplasma gondii in cats that are both definitive and intermediate hosts of this parasite. Therefore, we investigated the in vitro NETs formation which is induced by cat polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNs) against T. gondii tachyzoites. Firstly, PMNs were isolated from cat venous blood samples by using discontinues Percoll dilutions …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of limestone replacement with dietary micro-calcium carbonate (MCC) on performance, egg quality, and serum Ca metabolism in peak-phase laying hens. A total of 120 laying hens (30 wk of age) were assigned to 1 control or 4 treatment groups for 8 weeks. Half of the total limestone was replaced by calcite in different particle sizes in the treatment groups (1, 20, 40, and 100 µm) and by fine limestone (~2 mm) in control. During the experiment, egg production and mass decreased (p < 0.05); however, eggshell thickness increased in hens fed with calcite groups compared to the control fed birds. There was a contrast between control vs. treatment, and a negative linear trend (p = 0.11) with the particle sizes for feed conversion ratio (FCR) was recorded. The different particle size of calcite had no effect on feed consumption, egg quality parameters, and hematology parameters of serum. However, the serum calcium (p = 0.01) and vitamin D (p < 0.0001) levels were affected by calcite, serum parathyroid hormone, calcitonin, phosphorus levels, and Ca:P ratio were not affected. The effects of dietary calcite sources may differ from conventional or nano-sized calcium carbonate sources in laying hens, especially for Vit D metabolism.

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the rangeland quality of Ankara goats fed on some natural rangeland in Ankara on the mohair quality. The research was carried out in 3 different quality natural rangelands in Ankara province. Crude protein, ether extract, Ca, Fe, N, energy contents and digestibility, in vitro gas production, and relative feed values of good quality rangeland plants were the highest compared to other rangelands, but the crude fiber, acid detergent fiber, and neutral detergent fiber were the lowest (p < 0.05). In the study were used a total of 120 animals (20 males, 20 females in each farm) from 3 farms where Angora goats are raised in the region of rangelands. The mohair quality was determined in mohair samples taken from 6 month old, 1.5, and 2.5-yearold animals. Rangeland quality significantly affected mohair lengths, fineness, elasticity, tenacity, and clean mohair yield, in males and females (p < 0.05). The highest values were obtained from goats fed good quality rangeland (p < 0.05). The effect of age on these features was also important. The mohair quality (length, elasticity, tenacity) increased with increasing age (p < 0.05). The effect of the rangeland quality on the nozzle number was not significant, but the effect of age was significant. and, the nozzles number increased with increasing age. The nozzle depth was affected by the rangeland quality and age. The nozzle depth has increased due to the increase in rangeland quality and age. While the mohair Ca, Mg, S, Fe, and N content of male and female goats were higher in goats fed on good quality rangeland, these were lower in goats fed low-quality rangeland (p < 0.05). While mohair Na content positively affected rangeland quality in females (p < 0.01), was insignificant in males.

These groups {i.e. selected for 4-week body-weight group (WBS), selected for egg number (EBS), and random-bred control (RBC)}, were selected for three consecutive generations from a base population of 1125 quails. In total, 2700 four-week-old quails from three selected lines (225 birds per group per generation) were slaughtered in a total of four generations (G0 to G3). The effects of selection were evaluated on the carcass and meat quality traits in four generations. WBS in G3 presented significantly highest dressing yield, breast yield, thigh …

To develop the approach for efficient alfalfa silage fermentation, L. plantarum strain RC1.4 (LP-RC1.4) was used as starter culture with or without sucrose. Trial groups consisted of ten repetitions for each treatment including (1) control, with added sterile water (10 mL); (2) LP, silages treated with LP-RC1.4 alone (106 cfu g$^{-1}$ FM); (3) LP-S1, silages treated with LP-RC1.4 (10$^{6}$ cfu g$^{-1}$ FM) plus sucrose at 10 g/kg fresh matter; (4) LP-S$_{2}$, silages treated with LP-RC1.4 (106 cfu g-1 FM) plus sucrose at 20 g kg$^{-1}$ fresh matter. Inoculation improved the quality of the silaging demonstrating a lower decrease of silage …

In this study, we have observed different technological processes, which are commonly used in poultry production. Rations contained different amounts of barley and multi-enzyme, egg weight, egg mass, egg yield, feed intake, egg weight. The rations of the control groups were as follows: 0% barley (based of corn) (K), 15% untreated barley (A1), 15% pellet barley (A2), 15% flaked barley (A3), 30% untreated barley (A4), 30% pelleted barley (A5), 30% flaked barley (A6), 30% untreated barley + enzyme (0. 025%) (A7). In the research, 64 brown laying hens ATAK-S for 36 weeks were divided into 8 different treatments for egg …
