Metal ions are ubiquitously found in all living systems and play vital roles in supporting life forms by performing an array of biological activities. Such biological activities include binding and transforming organic molecules, and also acting as active centers and cofactors for catalysis of various acid-base and redox reactions in biological system. The main focus in bioinorganic chemistry is to elucidate the structural and functional roles of metals in biological systems. Seaweeds (macroalgae) accumulate heavy metals from seawater and can therefore serve as biological monitors of marine pollution. In this paper, we present data on the tissue chemistry of seaweeds from the area of Callahan Mine, an intertidal copper and zinc mine in Brooksville, ME, USA, abandoned in the 1970s and now designated as a Superfund site. The mine is located on the Goose Pond estuary, which drains into the ocean via a tidal waterfall at Goose Falls. Seaweed tissue samples from this estuary had the same relative concentrations of metals as had been reported previously in water samples from this …

The biological fate of amyloid beta (Aβ) species is a fundamental question in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis. The competition between clearance and aggregation of Aβs is critical for the onset of AD. Copper has been widely considered to be an inducer of harmful crosslinking of Aβs, and an important triggering factor for the onset of AD. In this report, however, we present data to show that copper can also be an inducer of Aβ degradation in the presence of a large excess of well-known intrinsic (such as dopamine) or extrinsic (such as vitamin C) anti-oxidants. Bioaccumulation And Oxidative Stress Impact Of Pb, Ni, Cu, And Cr Heavy Metals In Two Bryophyte Species, Pleurochaete Squarrosa And Timmiella Barbuloides, Serap Aydoğan, Bengi̇ Erdağ, Lale Aktaş

This study was conducted to evaluate the bioaccumulation and oxidative stress impact of lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), and chromium (Cr) in bryophyte species Pleurochaete squarrosa and Timmiella barbuloides exposed to Pb, Ni, Cu, and Cr at 1 mM concentration for 48 h. Bioaccumulation ratios in the non-Fenton metals Ni and Pb were found to be higher than in Fenton metals Cu and Cr for both moss species. Except for Cu, high levels of heavy metal accumulation caused a slight increase in dry weights of both species. Total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents of both species showed variations under Ni, …

The aim of this study was to increase laccase production in Trametes versicolor ATCC 200801 pellets by using various inducers and their combinations under repeated-batch conditions. Because copper is an effective inducer for laccase production, the effect of Cu on laccase production in this strain was tested first. The optimal Cu concentration for the highest laccase production was 0.5 mM. Following this preliminary study, the effect of other inducers [2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), syringaldazine, guaiacol, and 2,5-xylidine] on laccase production was determined. Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an emerging technique in the field of food analysis which provides various advantages such as minimal sample preparation, chemical free, rapid detection, provision of spatial information and portability. In this study, LIBS was employed for quantitative analysis of copper content in minced beef samples spiked with beef liver over three independent batches. Copper content was determined with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS) in order to obtain reference values for modelling. A series of complexes incorporating Zn(II), Cu(II), and Pd(II) ions, and 4-(5-heptyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)benzene-1,3-diol (L1) as model ligand, was synthesized in order to examine the nature of potential interactions between biologically active ligands, 1,3,4-thiadiazoles and metal ions with proven biological relevance. The structures of the compounds isolated were characterized using a number of spectroscopic methods including IR, Uv–vis, AAS, steady state and time-resolved fluorescence (TRF). The results obtained suggest that the L1-Zn(II) and L1-Pd(II) complexes consist of one molecule of L1 and one acetate ion acting as ligands, while the L1-Cu(II) complex adapts a 2:1 (L1: metal) stoichiometry. A total of 360 weanling pigs (DNA 200 × 400; initially 11.5 lb BW) were used in a 42-d study evaluating the effects of feeding Elarom SES in combination with increasing tri-basic copper chloride on nursery pig performance and fecal consistency. Elarom SES (Trouw Nutrition USA, Highland, IL) is a specialty feed ingredient containing a blend of active ingredients designed to enhance growth performance and gut health.
