Ec88-116 Universal Soil Loss Equation: A Handbook For Nebraska Producers, A. J. Jones, D. Walters, W. G. Hance, Elbert C. Dickey, J.R. Culver

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Tons of soil are lost from agricultural fields in Nebraska each year as a result of water erosion. The accelerated loss of topsoil reduces the availability of plant nutrients and water needed for optimum crop production. In addition, the eroded soil frequently moves into surface waters causing sediment to be deposited in streams and reservoirs and nutrients to be released into other biological systems. The purposes of this workbook are to provide an understandng of how soil erosion estimates are determined, to estimate erosion control resulting from numerous cropping systems, and to inform the producer of alternative practices which may …

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1987 Annual Summary, James Whitcomb

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made on oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells is counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur.

Disease And Insect Resistance Screening Of The National Subterranean Clover Collection, D J. Gillespie, M J. Barbetti Dec 1987

Disease And Insect Resistance Screening Of The National Subterranean Clover Collection, D J. Gillespie, M J. Barbetti

Division of Plant Research : Technical Report Series

This project commenced in May 1981 primarily to identify sources of resistance to clover scorch (Kabatiella caulivora), root rots (Pythium, Fusarium and Rhizoctonia spp.), and bluegreen aphid (Acyrthospihon kondoi) in the National Subterranean Clover Collection. Screening for resistance to red legged earthmite (Halotydeus destructor) was initiated part way through the project. Since commencement approximately 5,250 introductions and crossbred clover shave been tested for resistance to clover scorch, 420 for resistance to rootrots, 690 for resistance to blue green aphid and 160 for resistance to redlegged earth mite (R.L.E.M.). A large number of clovers possessing resistance to clover scorch have been …

Factors Affecting Frost Damage To Wheat In Western Australia, S P. Loss Dec 1987

Factors Affecting Frost Damage To Wheat In Western Australia, S P. Loss

Division of Plant Research : Technical Report Series

It may at first seem strange that precious research funds are being channelled into a project concerned with frost damage in a country where high temperatures and moisture stress limit the growth of plants for a large portion of the year. But cereal crops are only grown in the temperate zones of the continent during winter and spring when they may be exposed to low diurnal temperatures. In many areas cold damage is irregular and rare, however it limits yields not only by causing actual damage but also by restricting the most effective period for flowering. For muck of the Australian …

A New Subspecies Of The Free-Tailed Bat, Molossops Greenhalli, From Western Mexico (Mammalia: Chiroptera), J. Knox Jones Jr., Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

In June of 1964, field parties from the Museum of Natural History, the University of Kansas, collected two specimens of a unique free-tailed bat in Mexico, one in the state of Guerrero and the other in Oaxaca. These proved to be the first specimens of Molossops greenhalli taken outside of Trinidad and the first bats of the genus to be reported from north of Panama. Subsequently, Percy L. Clifton obtained, in the state of Jalisco, three more individuals of M. greenhalli, including the first male from the North American mainland.

Comparison with material from Trinidad indicates that the Mexican …

Mineral-Deficient Diets And The Pig’S Attraction To Blood: Implications For Tail-Biting, David Fraser Dec 1987

Mineral-Deficient Diets And The Pig’S Attraction To Blood: Implications For Tail-Biting, David Fraser

Abnormal Behavior Collection

In two experiments, individually penned growing pigs were exposed daily to two "tail models” (lengths of cotton cord about the size of a pig's tail), one of which had been impregnated with pigs' blood. When fed a balanced "control" diet, the pigs chewed significantly more on the blood-covered model than on the plain one, but with Iarge individual differences between animals. Four weeks of receiving a diet lacking all mineral supplements (iodized salt, dicalcium phosphate, limestone, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, and selenium) caused a pronounced increase in chewing the blood-covered model, and 4 wk of recovery on the control diet …

Isolation And Identification Of The Major Component Of Setal Exudate From Corythucha Ciliate, William Lusby, James Oliver, John W. Neal Jr., Robert Heath

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Clear microdroplets are associated with secretory, abdominal setae on nymphs of the sycamore lace bug Corythucha ciliata. The major component of this exudate material has been identified as 3,6-dihydroxy-2-[1-oxo- lO(E)-terradecenyl]cyclohex-2-en- 1-one [1]. Preliminary observations of these insects suggest a defensive function for these exudate droplets.

High concentrations of particulate ATP were found in the anoxic brines of the Orca Basin and East Flower Garden, Gulf of Mexico. Other measurements indicative of growth and respiration suggested that the microbial community in the brines was inactive, but somehow the ATP associated with the cells persisted. Conceivably, when cells growing just above the interface sank into the brine, the increased osmotic stress could elicit an osmoregulatory response resulting in increased ATP. It was also possible that hydrolytic enzymes were inactivated, resulting in the preservation of ATP. Experiments in which a culture of marine bacteria was suspended in menstrua …

Eskimo Curlew Sighted Dec 1987

Eskimo Curlew Sighted

Nebraska Bird Review

When Craig Faanes, Grand Island, went to the Mormon Island Crane Meadows 16 April 1987 to watch Sandhill Cranes at night he saw a bird that he first took for a Whimbrel. He was familiar with Whimbrels on both coasts, but the more he studied the bird the more he was convinced that the bird was an Eskimo Curlew. After he had gone to the natural history museum at UNL and studied a stuffed Eskimo Curlew be was convinced that that was what he had seen. After the date of this sighting Eskimo Curlews were reported from "the Sabine and …

First Report Of The Nou Records Committee, Wayne J. Mollhoff

Nebraska Bird Review

Since this is the first report of the NOU Records Committee, perhaps a few words of background explanation are in order. I was named to establish a records committee at the annual meeting of the NOU in May 1985. At the fall field day in October 1985 I met with those people who had indicated a willingness to serve and was named chairman. I presented a draft set of by-laws, which we discussed, amended, and adopted. The committee membership and by-laws were approved by the NOU Board of Directors and ultimately published (NBR 54:72-74, ]986). Two of the main …

YELLOW RAILS. On 21 September 1986, while conducting a waterfowl survey on the Jack Senn WMA, near Ceresco, Lancaster Co., I flushed a small rail-like bird, which flew a short distance before landing in heavy grass. Although its flight was very similar to the Virginia Rail and the Sora, which I was accustomed to seeing, the light color and white wing patches were very distinctive. Later I checked a field guide and found that the description most closely matching this bird was that of the very secretive Yellow Rail.

I had planned to do some rail and snipe hunting the …

1987 Fall Field Day

Nebraska Bird Review

The weather was bright and clear for the 75 people who attended some part of the 1987 Fall Field Day at the 4-H Camp at Halsey National Forest 3 and 4 October. It was nice to have Mrs. Gross, who broke her leg at the Valentine meeting, among those attending. Her leg was progressing according to schedule, although she still used a crutch, There was the usual slide show Saturday night, the rest of the time was for birding, including banding. The Executive Board decided to have the terms of members of the Records Committee start and expire with the …

Early Fall Migration Of Sedge Wrens, Paul A. Bedell

Nebraska Bird Review

Johnsgard (1980) lists the Sedge Wren (Cistothorus platensis) as an uncommon spring and fall migrant in eastern Nebraska, and a rare summer resident in eastern Nebraska, mostly east of a line from Knox to Gage counties. Half of the initial spring records occur between 1 and 12 May, with the latest 3 June. Half of the final fal1 records occur between 11 Sept. and 9 Oct., with the earliest 29 July. This paper presents observations of Sedge Wrens during 1987 in southcentral Nebraska, west of the line.

I found Sedge Wrens to be local1y common in grassy or …

Activation Of The Human Immunodeficiency Virus By Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, Jeffrey M. Ostrove, John Leonard, Karen E. Weck, Arnold B. Rabson, Howard Gendelman Dec 1987

Activation Of The Human Immunodeficiency Virus By Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, Jeffrey M. Ostrove, John Leonard, Karen E. Weck, Arnold B. Rabson, Howard Gendelman

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and some of its immediate-early genes stimulate expression of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) long terminal repeat (LTR) sequences and the replication of HIV itself. To demonstrate this, the HIV LTR was linked to the indicator gene chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) and transfected into Vero cells with or without the trans-activating gene (tat) of HIV. Infection of these cells with HSV-1 strain KOS or temperature-sensitive mutant tsB2l or tsE6 resulted in a large increase in CAT activity in the absence of tat and further augmentation in the presence of tat. This stimulation was seen at …
