The lin-14 locus of Caenorhabditis elegans plays an important role in specifying the normal timing and sequence of developmental events in the lateral hypodermal cell lineages. The results of gene dosage, complementation, and temperature-shift experiments indicate that the fates expressed by cells at successive stages of these cell lineages are specified by the level of lin-14 activity and that lin-14 acts at multiple times during development to control stage-specific choices of cell fate. Our observations suggest that during normal development a reduction in the level of lin-14 gene function causes the sequential expression of stage-specific cell fates.

The influence of trace metal contaminants (lead, cadmium, and mercury) on Sprague-Dawley rats was investigated to determine whether subclinical levels of these metals might have adverse effects on the host's ability to respond to an infective agent.In the present study, a trace metal contaminant-trypanosome system was employed to observe the hematological changes in rats infected with Trypanosoma lewisi. The animal groups were: (1) lead (Pb), (2) cadmium (Cd), (3) mercury (Hg), and (4) controls (animals not exposed to trace metals).Regardless of the trace metals, infected animals showed decreases in total erythrocyte counts and lower hematocrit values. A technique is described in which irrigation of the mantle cavity of oysters, Crassostrea gigas, induces pumping at steady rates. Simultaneous net influx of 10 amino acids (asp, glu, asn, ser, gly, tau, ala, val, phe, lys) is observed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Individual amino acids exhibit first-order exponential depletion from an initial medium concentration of 2.0 μM. Influx of radiolabeled alanine corresponds very closely to net entry of alanine as estimated by HPLC. Therefore, net entry of alanine from dilute solution (5 μM) occurs. We investigated some cell processes which may contribute to cell aggregation patterns in the social ameba Dictyostelium discoideum. Aggregation is known to be mediated by chemotaxis up periodic extracellular cAMP gradients; however, the details of cell movement during this stage of development have not been reported. We recorded cell behavior by time-lapse cinemicroscopy and collected cell motion and cell shape data by computer-aided planimetry.

In the first experiment, mice were presented with untreated paper on the floor of one side of a test tank and snake-scented or control (water misted) paper on the other side. The 20-Hz signals of finback whales (Balaenoptera physalus) were analyzed from more than 25 years of recordings at a variety of geographic locations on near-surface hydrophones close to whales and on deep hydrophone systems. These signals were composed of 1-s pulses of sinusoidal waveform with downward sweeping frequency from approximately 23 to 18 Hz at variable source levels up to 186 dB (re: 1 microPa at 1 m), usually with slightly lower levels for the pulses at the beginning and end of sequences. Interspecific hybridization was used to examine reproductive compatibility of Aedes (Protomacleaya) triseriatus (Say) with Aedes (P .) brelandi Zavortink and Aedes (P.) hendersoni Cockerell. Most male progeny were sterile intersexes when A. brelandi or A. hendersoni males were crossed with A. triseriatus females. Female hybrids, and males from the reciprocal crosses, were morphologically normal and fertile. Varying percentages of intersex males were observed among progeny when normal F1 hybrids were crossed to either parental species or with other hybrids. As with juvenile wolves or coyotes, adult livestock conducting dogs displayed the first-half segment of a functional predatory system of motor patterns and did not express play or social bonding toward sheep; whereas, like wolf or coyote pups, adult livestock protecting dogs displayed sequences of mixed social, submissive, play and investigatory motor patterns and rarely expressed during ontogeny (even when fully adult) predatory behaviors. The most parsimonious explanation of our findings is that behavioral differences in the two types of livestock dogs are a case of selected differential retardation (neoteny) of ancestral motor pattern development.
