Tb124: Chemical Control Of Balsam Twig Aphid, Midarus Abietinus Koch (Homoptera: Aphididae), R. L. Bradbury, E. A. Osgood
Technical Bulletins
This study was initiated to provide Christmas tree growers with a selection of insecticides capable of effective control of balsam twig aphid (Mindarus abietinus Koch) on balsam fir. Low rates of active ingredients were tested to assure minimal environmental impact and reduced chemical costs

Tb122: Comparison Of Alpha- And Beta-Carotene Content Of Supermarket Vs Roadside Stand Produce In Maine, R. J. Bushway, A, Yang, A. M. Yamani
Technical Bulletins
A study was conducted to determine the alpha- and beta-carotene content of supermarket vs roadside stand produce using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The fruits and vegetables were obtained from a major local supermarket chain and three roadside stands in Dixmont, Etna and Charleston, ME. Thirteen vegetables and one fruit were sampled during a ten-week period between July and September of 1985. Significant differences at the 0.05 level were observed between supermarket and roadside stand produce for only Swiss chard and green peppers with roadside stands having higher beta-carotene levels in both instances. Alpha-carotene was shown to be nonsignificant among sources …

Technical Bulletins
In the summer of 1985 a field experiment was conducted in the Sugarloaf area of Maine on the use of B.t.i. to reduce the numbers of black fly larvae in the Carrabassett River and a tributary stream. The objectives were to determine the rate of application necessary to produce an acceptable reduction in black fly larvae, to study the fate and persistence of B.t.i. in a stream following application, to determine the impact of B.t.i. on the abundance and drift of non-target stream insects and on the feeding success and diet composition of fishes in the treated streams.

B815: A Comparison Of Small Single- And Double-Drum Cable Systems For Prebunching Partial Cuts, Frederick M. Hathaway, Benjamin F. Hoffman
Bulletins
This study evaluated two single-drum and two double-drum winching systems for prebunching small-diameter, tree-length stems from partial cuts. Three farm tractors with Farmi winches and one sled-mounted winch were used. One single-drum system was run by professional woods workers and the others were operated by forestry students. Three different types of chokers were used and a skid cone was used with two systems.
The professional crew used a self-release block at the back of the trailside pile to avoid piling delays while the other systems used a spar tree. All systems were evaluated by time studies. The professional crew was …
Tb120: Alternative Assessment Of Individual Dietary Intake--A Pilot Study, Paula A. Quatromoni, Richard A. Cook
Tb120: Alternative Assessment Of Individual Dietary Intake--A Pilot Study, Paula A. Quatromoni, Richard A. Cook
Technical Bulletins
In an initial effort to devise a rapid assessment alternative that would provide a reliable estimate of an individual's usual dietary pattern, a Predicted Food List (estimated, abbreviated food frequency), an Actual Food List (recorded, truncated food frequency), and a Typical Diet Day (foods perceived as commonly consumed in a 24-hour period) were compared with a 75-day food record. Overall, the Predicted Food List appeared to be the best tool for depicting an individual's usual food intake. It was concluded that a shortened list of food items characterizing an individual's normal nutrient intake level may be a useful instrument allowing …
Patterns Of Tree Mortality During An Uncontrolled Spruce Budworm Outbreak In Baxter State Park, 1983, Akira Osawa, Charles J. Spies Iii, John B. Dimond
Patterns Of Tree Mortality During An Uncontrolled Spruce Budworm Outbreak In Baxter State Park, 1983, Akira Osawa, Charles J. Spies Iii, John B. Dimond
Technical Bulletins
A forest inventory of Baxter State Park, Maine, was done during the summer and fall of 1983 to study the patterns of mortality in balsam fir and in the red-black spruce complex during an uncontrolled spruce budworm outbreak. The volume of trees that died during the outbreak was estimated at 40% of the original quantity. Fir mortality was consistently greater than that of spruce. The percentage mortality of spruce was always greater in the higher elevation zone than in the lower elevation zone. Percentage mortality of fir and spruce showed inconsistent patterns in relation to the proportion of hardwood species …
Tb116: Integrated Systems For Managing Potatoes In The Northeast, G. B. White, S. S. Lazarus
Tb116: Integrated Systems For Managing Potatoes In The Northeast, G. B. White, S. S. Lazarus
Technical Bulletins
This technical bulletin presents the results of a research project developed to determine the feasibility of using an integrated pest management (IPM) system to improve economic and environmental benefits for the Northeast region. Research was conducted to develop and evaluate IPM techniques. These techniques were then tested, improved, and implemented in pilot programs on commercial potato farms in Suffolk County and Steuben County, New York, and Aroostook County, Maine.

Bulletins
New potato clones and varieties must be tested against commercially accepted cultivars to determine If they possess advantages over existing varieties. Possible Improvements over the existing varieties could Include greater disease resistance or tolerance, higher yield, more uniform tuber size distribution, Improved storagability, good processing characteristics, etc. Often new cultivars are sought to fill local special-purpose needs. The cooperative potato variety trials reported In this bulletin were conducted to provide Information on the performance, adaptation, and performance stability of new potato clones under a wide range of geographic, climatic, soil, and cultural conditions. These tests are contributions to Regional Project …

B813: Harvesting Small Trees For Biomass, Benjamin F. Hoffman Jr.
B813: Harvesting Small Trees For Biomass, Benjamin F. Hoffman Jr.
Bulletins
This study evaluated precommercial, full-tree thinning of saplings and small poletimber (1-8 inches dbh) using chainsaws and modified farm tractors for skidders. To facilitate cutting large numbers of small trees (1-5 inches), the chainsaw was fitted with a felling frame. The cutter felled and manually bunched up to 145 trees/ 2.7 tons per productive man- hour. Average production, assuming 73% efficiency, was 90 trees/1.8 tons per scheduled hour at a cost of $6.22/ton. Skidding was done by a two-wheel drive grapple skidder and a four-wheel drive farm tractor with double-drum winch. The grapple skidder produced 3.8 tons per scheduled hour …
