Significant levels of secondary sexual variation and expected levels of individual variation were demonstrated in all samples of Molossus molossus from Jamaica, Guadeloupe, and Trinidad examined with univariate analyses. Significant morphometric differences were demonstrated among samples of Molossus molossus that originated from geographically close localities on the same island. Using multivariate techniques, broader patterns of geographic variation were demonstrated among the Antillean populations of M. molossus.

Systematic relationships of southern populations of short-tailed shrews (genus Blarina) are assessed on the basis of univariate and multivariate statistics. Populations are separated into two phena; southwestern short-tailed shrews are significantly larger morphometrically than southeastern forms. The two phena apparently represent distinct species. The name Blarina hylophaga is available for southwestern populations, and the name Blarina carolinensis is here restricted to short-tailed shrews in the southeastern United States.

The Texas pocket gopher (Geomys personarus), which occupies a range in southern Texas and extreme northeastern Tamaulipas, was examined for morphological variation. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine age, secondary sexual, individual, and geographic variation. Significant differences were found among the three age classes and between the sexes for 12 of 13 cranial measurements. Males displayed higher individual variation than females. Distributions of the six previously recognized subspecies (fallax, fuscus, maritimus, megapotamus, personatus, and streckeri) were examined. An additional subspecies is recognized and described. The Ecology Of The Raccoon (Procyon Lotor) In Cades Coves, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Alan Robert Rabinowitz

From September 1979 through September 1980, 288 captures of 153 raccoons were made in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee. Fourteen raccoons were equipped with radio-transmitters to monitor movements, activity patterns, and denning behavior. Measurements, blood samples, and ectoparasites were taken from all animals.

Population density was estimated to be 1 raccoon/17 ha with sex and age ratios indicating a stable population. Parturition occurred in early June with a mean litter size of 2.8 young. Average longevity of raccoons was 30 months with a maximum longevity of approximately 86 months. There were indications of increased male mortality in …

About forty people participated in the 1981 Fall Field Day, which was scheduled from noon Saturday 3 October to noon Sunday 4 October, but which was anticipated by early arrivals Friday and on Saturday morning. The weather was windy and cool, the skies overcast much of the time, with some rain Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning overcast so that it was hard to get colors. But almost as soon as the meeting broke up Sunday noon the sky cleared and everybody went home in bright sunshine. There was a slide show Saturday night. This study investigated the effects of serving less preferred foods (vegetables) prior to the noon meal on: (1) The amount of vegetables eaten. (2) The variety of different vegetables eaten. (3) The number of servings of vegetables requested by the children. A plate containing 10 grams each of six different vegetables was served under one of two conditions: (1) Alone, 10 minutes prior to the main meal. (2) With the main meal for the first 10 minutes. Habitat prefernce for the aestivation of Hyper postica was researched by the sampling of field borders. Sampling methods by the sampling of field borders. Sampling methods included soil and vegetative litter collection, sweeping of borders with an insect net and emergence trapping of wooded and grass habitat. Fields were swept once a week to determine if H. postica returned to the field before the winter season. The methods resulted in the following findings: Weevils do not aestivate litter. Data from sweeping indicated that weevils prefer areas that include alfalfa and grasses. Results of observations implied that there is a direct …

The Rockport Quarry Limestone of the Lower Traverse Group represents a sequence of laterally contemporaneous carbonate platform sediments characterized in outcrop by four facies: (l) stromatoporoid biolithite, (2) organic-mud packstone, (3) biolithite-micrite transition, and (4) micrite. In facies (l), (2) and (3) dark brown 4-micron microspheres are found grouped or singly in wispy seams of brown carbonaceous material. Three species of filamentous blue-green algae were discovered in insoluble residues of facies (l) and (2). Numerous lamellar stromatoporoids and solitary corals occur with the carbonaceous-rich sediment in facies (l). Coalescing lenses of crinoid and bryozoan debris occur with the carbonaceous sediment …

Selective recovery of waste corrugated into the kraft and NSSC fractions is gaining in popularity. This selective reuse of fibers enables the papermaker to use more recycled fiber in the linerboard portion of corrugated boxes. It is well documented that 100% recycled paper can be used in the medium while the highest percentage of secondary fibers in the linerboard is 30%. Greater than 30% recycled fiber in the linerboard results in poor runnability. Since reuse of secondary fibers in the medium is already at a maximum, this paper will place more emphasis on the reuse in the linerboard.

Until the establishment of the Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976 (FCMA), fish outside the United States' twelve mile fishery zone were, according to international law, common property and belonged to the nation or individual that caught them. This common property law was based on the concept that fish resources were so large that no amount of fishing would interfere with the right of others to catch fish. Modern technology, however, has created equipment that enabled foreign and domestic fishermen to over-fish the resource. The effects of electrocoagulation as a flocculating aide for deinking was evaluated using a "homemade" electrode unit. The unit was inserted into a laboratory-size Voith-Morden forced-air flotation cell. The process of electrocoagulation involves two steps:

1. Reducing the zeta potential of the system to 0.0 mV by pH adjustment.

2. The passing of current through the stock suspension which causes the electrolysis of the water, and thus hydrogen and oxygen gas bubbles are produced. These gas bubbles collect ink particles to form solid-gas composites which can be removed more easily using flotation.

The differential staining of chromosomes with the use of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BUdR) was discovered in 1972. Since then, the BUdR technique has been modified and improved. It is used to study cellular kinetics; yet its most extensive use today is focused on studying sister chromatid exchange (SCE). Studies show that the frequency of SCEs increases significantly in the presence of mutagenic and carcinogenic agents. Hence, the BUdR technique (commonly referred to as the SCE technique) has been useful as a diagnostic tool to test for mutagenic anc carcinogenic agents.

Small Mammals In Openings In Virginia's Dismal Swamp, Robert K. Rose

In a study of small mammals of openings in the Dismal Swamp of Virginia, seven species were obtained using pitfall traps. Samples included several species rarely caught in the Swamp - seven specimens of the Dismal Swamp subspecies of the southern bog lemming, Synaptomys cooperi helaletes, the first collected in this century; two least shrews, Cryptotis parva; and 15 southeastern shrews, Sorex longirostris fisheri . Results are compared to previous studies, conducted primarily in forested habitats, in which the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, and the golden mouse, Ochrotomys nuttalli, were numerically dominant.
