Fish Feeding-Habit Studies From Tomales Bay, California, Stephen Robert Karl Dec 1978

Fish Feeding-Habit Studies From Tomales Bay, California, Stephen Robert Karl

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Bat Ray, Myliobatis californica Gill, occurs from Oregon to the Gulf of California and is common in California bays during the spring and summer. MacGinitie (1935) observed that during its feeding activities, the Bat Ray can dig channels up to 1 meter wide, 50 cm deep and 4.5 meters long in benthic substrates. In intertidal sand flats in Tomales Bay, California, circular pits up to 1 meter in diameter and 20 cm in depth are made by Bat Rays in late summer. In some areas over 50% of the sand flat surface is covered with Bat Ray pits. This …

The Effect Of Temperature On The Life Cycle Of Drosophila Nebulosa, Scott S. Nagatani Jan 1978

The Effect Of Temperature On The Life Cycle Of Drosophila Nebulosa, Scott S. Nagatani

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

It is the purpose of this research to study the effect of temperature on the life cycle of D. nebulosa. D. nebulosa is considered a stenothermal species from a warm environment and has been reported in Texas and Florida, the West Indies, Mexico, Central America, and as far south as Brazil. According to the hypothesis of Hunter (1964), the capacity of this species for adaptation to different temperatures would not be expected to be as great as that of a eurythermal species. Stenothermal species are relatively limited by the environmental temperature, and therefore, one would expect a marked decrease in …

The Structure Of Macrofaunal Assemblages Inhabiting An Intertidal Sandflat In Tomales Bay, California, Jay Charles Carroll Jan 1978

The Structure Of Macrofaunal Assemblages Inhabiting An Intertidal Sandflat In Tomales Bay, California, Jay Charles Carroll

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Confronted with a diverse sandflat community of interacting organisms and a spectrum of physical forces, a meaningful community analysis should begin with a description of physical characteristics and faunal distributions over time. The functional importance of certain species in the community should then be investigated by using both field and laboratory experiments. Consequently, the purpose of this research was twofold: (1) to apply the methods of similarity and gradient analysis to describe the faunal gradation on an intertidal sandflat and; (2) use these data to design a predator exclusion field experiment aimed at assessing the effects of shorebird, crab and …

The Effects Of Melatonin Injection On Glucose Tolerance In Intact And Pinealectomized Laboratory Rats, Dennis Dale Bruno Jan 1978

The Effects Of Melatonin Injection On Glucose Tolerance In Intact And Pinealectomized Laboratory Rats, Dennis Dale Bruno

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Studies on rat islet preparations have shown melatonin inhibits MAO activity and thereby reduces glucose mediated insulin release. The objective of this work is to investigate the effects of melatonin on insulin release, and on glucose mediated insulin release in the intact and in the pinealectomized rat.

Biochemical Characteristics And Antibiogram Patterns Of Some Gram-Negative Nonfermentors, Donald E. Berkowitz Jan 1978

Biochemical Characteristics And Antibiogram Patterns Of Some Gram-Negative Nonfermentors, Donald E. Berkowitz

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study was undertaken, chiefly, for the purpose of characterizing biochemically a random sample of non fermentative bacilli obtained from local hospitals and determining the prevalence of Ps. aeruginosa among them. A second objective was to compare the antibiogram patterns obtained in this study with those reported by other investigators, and thirdly to establish a baseline for future comparative studies.

A Study Of Potassium Level Alterations In Twenty Cardiac Surgical Patients Subjected To Cardiopulmonary Bypass, Steven J. Prato Jan 1978

A Study Of Potassium Level Alterations In Twenty Cardiac Surgical Patients Subjected To Cardiopulmonary Bypass, Steven J. Prato

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The events of cardiac surgery combined with moderate hypothermia hemodilution perfusion and postoperative respiratory care provide the stimuli for the alteration of K+ levels in red blood cells, plasma, and urine. The purpose of this study was to measure the deviations from normal potassium ion concentrations in an attempt to understand the physiological processes involved.

Glycerol Permeability In Erythrocytes Of Peromyscus Californicus : The Effect Of Temperature, James K. Vanarsdel Jan 1978

Glycerol Permeability In Erythrocytes Of Peromyscus Californicus : The Effect Of Temperature, James K. Vanarsdel

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present work was done to determine the effect of temperature of the half-saturation constant (ø) and the maximum transport rate (K) of the facilitated diffusion of glycerol across the erythrocyte membrane of Peromyscus californicus.

Experimental Studies Of Interactions Between Zostera Marina And The Associated Benthic Fauna, David Marshall Penny Jan 1978

Experimental Studies Of Interactions Between Zostera Marina And The Associated Benthic Fauna, David Marshall Penny

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of the present study are to: (1) Describe the macro-invertebrate species composition and seasonal changes in abundance of the benthic infauna within an eelgrass bed; (2) Observe what immediate effects occur to the benthic community as a result of experimental removal of eelgrass plants from plants within the Zostera bed; (3) Measure the seasonal variation of eelgrass turion length over an annual cycle and determine its correlation to biomass (dry weight); (4) Examine, by means of field experiments, the importance of incident solar irradiation in affecting the seasonal growth of Zostera; and (5) Determine the relationship, if any, …

Biochemical And Antibiogram Characteristics Of Certain Enterobacteriaceae, John Shaffer Jan 1978

Biochemical And Antibiogram Characteristics Of Certain Enterobacteriaceae, John Shaffer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study is a continuation of the investigations of Hall (1976), Storey (1977), and Berkowitz (1978) on antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of bacteria isolated from local hospitals in Stockton, California. It extends the work of Hall (1976) on the K-E-S group to include three species of Proteus and Escherichia coli. New antibiotics (tobramycin, amikacin and cefamandole) are also added to the antibiogram.

Antimicrobial Activity Of Plant Extracts, Melinda J. Seid Jan 1978

Antimicrobial Activity Of Plant Extracts, Melinda J. Seid

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate a possible antimicrobial activity in the following plants: Brunfelsia hopeana, Anemopsis californica, and Heimia salicifolia against Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive coccus, Escherichia coli, a Gram-negative fermenter, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a Gram-negative non-fermenter, and the yeast Candida albicans.

Effects Of Intertidal Height And Infestation By Fabia Subquadrata Dana On Glycogen, Lipid And Body Component Indices Of Mytilus Californianus Conrad, Gregory L. Anderson Jan 1978

Effects Of Intertidal Height And Infestation By Fabia Subquadrata Dana On Glycogen, Lipid And Body Component Indices Of Mytilus Californianus Conrad, Gregory L. Anderson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

As our knowledge of bivalves has increased, so has information about their parasites. Most studies of bivalve parasites have been devoted to groups infesting commercially important mollusks, notably trematodes and copepods. Another group of bivalve symbionts which has been known since the early nineteenth century is the brachyuran genus Pinnotheres Latreille, 1802 (commonly known as pea crabs). The generic name was given because of the belief that the crabs were predators upon the scallops in which they were most frequently found (Pearce, 1966). However, Stebbing (1893) suggested that instead of acting as predators, the crabs were in fact serving as …

The Synecology Of Dense Assemblages Of The Deposit-Feeding Polychaete, Axiothella Rubrocincta (Maldanidae), James Robert Weinberg Jan 1978

The Synecology Of Dense Assemblages Of The Deposit-Feeding Polychaete, Axiothella Rubrocincta (Maldanidae), James Robert Weinberg

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Interspecific interactions have been shown to play critical roles in determining the realized niches of species in marine rocky intertidal (ie Connell 1961, Paine 1966,, Dayton 1971) and terrestrial (i.e~ Harper 1969, Pianka 1973, Cody 1974) communities. In contrast, such interactions have not been clearly demonstrated as determinants of the distribution and abundance of marine intertidal soft-substrate organisms (however, see Levinton 1977). There are great physical differences between the rocky and mud-sandflat intertidal habitats, Some of these are wave exposure, sediment size (boulders to silts), penetrability and organic content of the substrate, frequency of log damage, and exposure to sunlight. …

The Effects Of Predation And Sediment Reworking By The Maldanid Polychaete Axiothella Rubrocincta (Johnson) On Benthic Littoral Microalgae Assemblages, Gary Scott Shusta Jan 1978

The Effects Of Predation And Sediment Reworking By The Maldanid Polychaete Axiothella Rubrocincta (Johnson) On Benthic Littoral Microalgae Assemblages, Gary Scott Shusta

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The taxonomic composition of the diatom assemblages inhabiting the substrate on the mudflat, and the effects of a cohabiting deposit-feeding invertebrate on the diatom assemblage structure are the subjects of this paper. While pelagic diatoms have received considerable attention in the literature to date, comparatively little is known about the ecology and distribution of benthic diatoms are known to be cosmopolitan in their distributions (Alee, 1950). These plants have been found to be opportunistic species in that they are quick to respond to relatively small perturbations in physical conditions. It has also been demonstrated that distinct associations of diatoms exist …
