Results Of The Third International Winter Wheat Performance Nursery, J. E. Stroike, V. A. Johnson, J. W. Schmidt, P. J. Mattern, K. D. Wilhelmi

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

This is the third report of results from an International Winter Wheat Performance Nursery (IWWPN) organized in 1968 by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, under a contract with the Agency for International Development, U.S. Department of State. The nursery was designed to (1) test the adaptation of winter wheat varieties in a range of latitudes, daylengths, fertility conditions, water management, and disease complexes; (2) identify superior winter varieties to serve as recipient genotypes for high protein and high lysine genes, and (3) test the degree of expression and stability of the …

Results Of Systematic Analyses For Protein And Lysine Composition Of Common Wheats (Triticum Aestivum L.) In The Usda World Collection, K. P. Vogel, V. A. Johnson, P. J. Mattern

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

Protein and lysine contents of 12,613 common wheats of the USDA World Wheat Collection were determined in order to identify wheats that may be sources of genes for high protein and high lysine. Results indicate that significant genetic differences in protein and lysine content probably exist among world collection common wheats. Selection criteria have been developed for further evaluation of World Collection lines high in protein and lysine content.

The Influence Of Soil Temperature On Soybean Seed Emergence, Dennis B. Egli, J. L. Hatfield, J. Hill, Dennis M. Tekrony

Agronomy Notes

The best way to obtain adequate soybean stands is to plant high quality seed in an optimum soil environment. But this year many farmers may not be able to obtain enough high quality soybean seed and some acreage may be planted with seed of lower than normal quality. Thus it will be even more important to have an optimum soil environment.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Part I. Formation and control of chlorophyll, solanine alkaloids, and sprouts of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) tubers

Incorporation of radioactive carbon from acetic acid-2-14C (sodium salt), β-hydroxy-β-methylglutaric acid (HMG)-3-14C, L-leucine-U-14C, L-alanine-U-14C, and D-glucose-U-14C into the predominant glycosidic steroidal alkaloids, ⍺-solanine and ⍺-chaconine of potato sprouts was 4.88, 9.0, 15, 24, and 20 times less than that of mevalonic acid (MVA)=2-14C (DBED salt), respectively. The efficiency ratio revealed that β-hydroxy-β-methylglutaric acid (HMG)-3-14C was incorporated via acetate or acetoacetate. The distribution of radioactivity originated from D-glucose-U-14 …

Yield And Chemical Composition Of Barley Silage, John Henry James May 1973

Yield And Chemical Composition Of Barley Silage, John Henry James

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The potential of Barsoy barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) as a silage crop was studied at Western Kentucky University in 1970-1971. The field study was conducted at two locations. Barley was seeded at the rate of 107.5 kg/ha in a Pembroke silt loam soil at both locations in September, 1970. At the time of planting the soil was fertilized with 7.5, 32.4 and 33.1 kg/ha of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, respectively. Plants at location 2 received an additional 23.7 kg/ha of nitrogen in February, 1971.

Whole barley plants were harvested at weekly intervals from March 11 through June 3 at …

Yield, Crude Protein & Crude Fiber Content Of Three Forage Sorghum Cultivars During The Growing Season & After Frost, William Davis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Yield, crude protein, and crude fiber of 'Piper' sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor var. sudanese (L.) Moench), and 'Sweet Sioux' and 'FFR66 1 sorghum (Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench) X sudangrass hybrids were studied during the growing season and after frost.

Three treatments were studied, namely--4-s (four summer harvests and short or about 0.6 m at the time of frost), 3-M (three summer harvests and medium or 1.5 in at the time of frost), 2-T (two summer harvests and tall or 2.0 in at the time of frost). Dry matter yield, crude protein, and crude fiber were calculated.

The three cultivars …

Grain Sorghum Performance Tests-1972, James H. Herbek, Morris J. Bitzer Mar 1973

Grain Sorghum Performance Tests-1972, James H. Herbek, Morris J. Bitzer

Agronomy Notes

Grain sorghum performance tests provide estimates of the relative performance of grain sorghum hybrids in Kentucky. These estimates, hopefully, will aid growers in their selection of a hybrid. The choice of the best grain sorghum hybrid for a given set of crop management conditions and environmental variables is an important step to profitable grain sorghum production. Hybrids should be selected that are well adapted to a given area and have records of high performance.

Grain sorghum performance tests were conducted at three locations in Kentucky in 1972. This report presents the yield and other agronomic data obtained at these locations.

Time Of Planting And Rate Of Seeding On Lupin Yield, G Walton

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Of the four time of planting trials twodefinitely showed superiority of earlier seeding (73BA5, 73E6). The two trials in the Southwest (73BR14 and 73MT7) gave highest yields with June sowing compared to May. Three trials (73BR14, 73E6 and 73BA5) appear to have a Variety x Time interaction for plant density, but no definite trend for either Uniharvest or Unicrop although later sowing reduced plant density. Seeding rates in excess of 82 kg/ha gave the highest yields in all trials. The rate of seeding experiments (73BA5 and 73MT7) show that the best crop density for yield (graph) lies between 8 and …

Learning To Live With Clover Scorch, A Bokor, D. L. Chatel

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Recent research has increased our understanding of clover scorch disease in Western Australia.

An economic control has yet to be developed but it appears that management can be adjusted to reduce damage to pastures and there is scope for using resistant species and less susceptible cultivars to escape the disease.

A major research programme is in progress.

The Art And Science Of Plant Breeding, John Sylvester Gladstones Jan 1973

The Art And Science Of Plant Breeding, John Sylvester Gladstones

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The first part of this article described the evolution of crop varieties and their improvement by simple selection. This part discusses cross-breeding and the other techniques which underly most modern plant breeding programmes.

The purpose cf crossing is to generate new combinations of varietal characteristics. It does not create anything basically new. All the genetic "ingredients" of a new variety must be present in one or other of the parents.

Summary Of 1972 Seasonal Results "Decide" Superphosphate Rates On Pastures, J. W. Bowden

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

A total of 53 pasture trials were topdressed. Of these, 37 trials were quantitatively assessed at different times during the growing season. Of the 15 wheat trials sown, only four trials gave useful results because of multiple drilling techniques used on most trials. Until the trial results have undergone comprehensive statistical analysis, no conclusions can be drawn. about the levels of response or "optimum" rates of superphosphate application at individual sites. However, because of the very short growing season in 1972 responses were generally poor. It appears that nil superphosphate application would have been optimum for animal production in the …
