An Economic Impact Analysis Of The Proposed Yakima/Klickitat Fishery Enhancement Project; Preliminary Design Report, Appendix D., Richard S. Mack, Donald J. Cocheba, Daniel Green, David W. Hedrick

Economics Faculty Scholarship

The objective of this study is to estimate the economic impact of the proposed Yakima/Klickitat Production Project on the local economies of the Yakima and Klickitat subbasins. The project, when operating at planned maximum production, will augment the total number of salmon and steelhead returning to the subbasins by 77,600 and will increase the sustainable terminal harvest by 55,160. These estimates do not include fish harvested in the ocean or in the mainstem Columbia. In addition to evaluating the impacts of the construction, operations and maintenance, experimentation and monitoring, and harvest activities described in the Draft Environmental Assessment (Bonneville Power …

1988 Fall Field Day

Nebraska Bird Review

Some innovations greeted the 60 registrants at the 1989 Field Day, 6 October, at the 4-H camp at Halsey National Forest: there was a canoe float down the Middle Loup River and a lesson on bird calls Saturday morning, in additl0 to the usual self-guided birding trips and demonstration of bird banding. Blow ups of the field card were posted, so that sightings could be posted currently and locations of special sightings could be written on a chalkboard. Saturday morning was overcast and chilly (otherwise the weather was sunny and mild), but 7 did make the float trip down to …

Have The Northern Cardinal And The Red-Bellied Woodpecker Expanded Their Ranges In Nebraska Recently, 1968-1987?, E.H. Maddux

Nebraska Bird Review

The Northern Cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) and the Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) are both common permanent residents of Nebraska (Johnsgard 1980: Bray, Padelford, and Silcock i986). Over at least the last four decades there have been published reports that the two species have been expanding their respective ranges to the west and to the north. In the case of the Northern Cardinal the range expansion has been extensive in distance and has occurred over a long period of time. "Originally a bird of the south, the Kentucky Cardinal, or Virginia Redbird, has pushed its way northward until …

MINK AND OTTER. On a trip to West Point on 2 June 1989 I took N 79 north to Snyder. As I was travelling north near the town of Prague I noticed a large river otter loping through a field in broad daylight, paralleling a a wooded stream. It probably was an itinerant, recently released, and was going about the business of looking for a better home. Later that day, near West Point, I saw a mink quickly cross the road from one stream to another, in the area of a wet prairie surrounding both sides of the road.' I …

Introduction And Enhancement Of Vegetative Cover At Lake Mead, Jennifer S. Haley, Lisa K. Croft, Suzanne E. Leavitt, Larry J. Paulson

Publications (WR)

Studies done by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) and the Arizona Fish and Game between 1978 and 1981 indicate that inadequate cover may be limiting the production and survival of largemouth bass at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA). As a result of these studies, NDOW initiated a contract in 1986 with the Lake Mead Research Center (LMRC) to investigate means of improving habitat for game fish by introducing natural and/or artificial cover.

During Phase I (1986-1987) of this contract, the shoreline of Lake Mead was surveyed for aquatic and terrestrial plant growth. Also during this time, submerged …

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1989 Annual Summary, Bruce J. Barber Dec 1989

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1989 Annual Summary, Bruce J. Barber

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts surveys of oyster spatfall (or "setting") in Virginia waters throughout the summer reproductive period. This survey provides an estimate of the potential of a particular area for receiving a "strike 11 or set of oysters on the bottom and helps define the timing of setting events. Information obtained by this effort is valuable to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) for its shell repletion program, and to private oyster growers, both of whom are interested in maximizing the timing of shell planting. To assist in that area, a biweekly report of spatfall …

Recent Sedge Wren Observations In Nebraska, Mary Clausen Dec 1989

Recent Sedge Wren Observations In Nebraska, Mary Clausen

Nebraska Bird Review

The Sedge Wren (Cistothorus platensis) in Nebraska was considered by Rapp (1958) an uncommon migrant in the eastern third of the state, and a rare breeder in suitable marshes in the eastern quarter, and by Johnsgard (1986) as an uncommon spring and fall migrant in the east and a rare summer resident in the eastern third of the state, mostly east of a line from Knox to Gage counties. Recent articles have prompted questions concerning the rarity of Sedge Wrens nesting in Nebraska (Bedell 1987, Lingle and Bedell 1989) and the possibility that may be nesting late in …

Species Richness Gradients Of Oak Forest Plants Along The Missouri River In Nebraska And Iowa, Steven B. Rolfsmeier Dec 1989

Species Richness Gradients Of Oak Forest Plants Along The Missouri River In Nebraska And Iowa, Steven B. Rolfsmeier

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The upland deciduous forests of the Missouri River valley contain many plants typical of forests to the east of this area, which are assumed to have migrated northward and westward along the river in postglacial times. Previous workers have reported a gradient of decreasing species richness upstream among woody species, which is suggested to be the result of climatic gradients and differential dispersal capabilities of the immigrant species. Floristic work on all vascular species in eight woodland sites along the Nebraska-Iowa border quantifies the presence of similar gradients for herbaceous species, but of differing degrees. These studies also reveal the …

The Relationship Between The Murine Primary Immune Response To Sheep Red Blood Cells & Heterosis, Russell Gailor Dec 1989

The Relationship Between The Murine Primary Immune Response To Sheep Red Blood Cells & Heterosis, Russell Gailor

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Two inbred strains of mice, BALB/c and C57BL, were crossbred to produce Fl hybrids. This breeding scheme ensured a high degree of genetic heterozygosity as exemplified by the fact that the average weight of the Fl hybrids at 10 weeks of age was 10.1 percent greater that that of their contemporaries in the inbred parental strains.

The three lines of mice were then challenged with a 0.5 ml intraperitoneal injection of two-percent sheep red blood cells (SRBC). After a 15-day period the mice were bled and their sera were microtitrated for anti-SRBC agglutinin and the titers statistically analyzed. The Fl …

Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee Report To The Hon Minister For Fisheries., Fisheries Dept. Of Western Australia

Fisheries management papers

To ensure full consultation with members of the fishing industry, the Committee arranged a series of meetings at the main coastal centres after the close of the fishing season. Each meeting followed the same format which allowed matters related to research and management to be discussed. After these meetings the Committee met to formulate its advice to the Minister on the matters raised during the Coastal Tour and from Committee discussions.

Fishing Licences As Security For Loans., Fisheries Department Of Western Australia.

Fisheries management papers

During mid 1988 the Minister for Fisheries at that time, the Hon Julian Grill, sought the establishment of a committee of advice to examine security arrangements for financial institutions providing funds for fishing licences and fishing boats. The prime objective of the Committee was to examine and report upon the requirements for establishing fishing licences as a form of collateral for loans. The major issue before the Committee arose from licence holders seeding generally the means by which their investment in a fishing licence could be used as security, whereas lending institutions sought to ensure their loans would be adequately …

Index Selection For Components Of Litter Size In Swine: Response To Five Generations Of Selection, S. M. Neal, R. K. Johnson, R. J. Kittock

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Selection for an index of ovulation rate (OR) and embryo (fetal) survival rate (ES) to 50 d of gestation (I = 10.6 x OR + 72.6 x ES) was practiced for five generations in a line that was a composite population of the Large White and Landrace breeds of swine. A control line sampled from the same population was selected randomly and mated. Ovulation rate and number of fetuses (FETS) were measured by laparotomy and ES was calculated as FETS/OR. The select line averaged 43 litters by 18 sires and the control line averaged 42 litters by 15 sires per …

A Survey Of The Flora And Vegetion Of The Mayville Ledge Beech-Maple Woods State Natural Area, Lawrence A. Leitner

Field Station Bulletins

At least 132 vascular plant species were present in two relatively undisturbed woods in the Mayville Ledge Natural Area. The Plateau Woods was dominated by ironwood (Ostrya virginiana), American beech (Fagus grandifolia), and sugar maple (Acer saccharum), with a Continuum Index of 2535. Red oak (Quercus rubra), basswood (Tilia americana), and sugar maple were the most important trees of the Slope Woods, where the Continuum Index reached 2253. Sugar maple dominated the sapling and seedling layers of both stands. American beech was completely absent from the Slope, while red oak was limited to minor status on the Plateau. The Slope …

Audubon/Au-Du-Bon: Man And Artist, Walter Sutton

The Courier

This article highlights some of the works of the legendary work of John James Audubon, drawn from the collection located in Syracuse University's Special Collections. The author gives special attention to the 1820-21 journal of his voyage down the Ohio and Mississippi (which has been preserved intact), the English and Scottish journal of 1826 (also in its original form), and the descriptive sketches of early pioneer life in the Ornithological Biography. These early journal sources dramatically reveal, at first hand, Audubon's long struggle through many failures and obstacles to win the success and recognition he craved and also enduring status …

The Effects Of Site Quality On Breeding-Site Fidelity In Bobolinks, Eric Bollinger, Thomas Gavin

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

We compared breeding-site fidelity of Bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) at two low-quality sites (Bald Hill and Shackelton Point, BH +SP) with that at one high-quality site (Moore Road, MR) in central New York. Yearly density of fledglings at Moore Road was more than six times the density at Bald Hill and Shackelton Point. Furthermore, individual residents fledged 50-70% more young at the high-quality site. At Moore Road, 70% of the males and 49% of the females returned one or more times, compared with 44% of the males and 25% of the females at the low-quality sites. Successful residents (i.e. those fledging …

“Scissor-tailed Flycatcher Nest in Cass County”: On 2 July 1989 Greg Hertel, Murray, Cass Co., reported an adult Scissor-tailed Flycatcher in his yard. He thought it had left the area, but Betty Allen and Ruth Green went down on 8 July to look for it, and they finally found it (a male) in Young Memorial Park. The next morning Betty took others down to see it and found a female on a nest on a 40-foot light pole used to floodlight the ball field.

Cassin’S Sparrow In Dundy And Chase Counties, Nebraska, W. Ross Silcock, Mark A. Brogie

Nebraska Bird Review

On 3 and 4 June 1989 Tanya Bray, Doug Rose, and I [W. Ross Silcock] traveled to Dundy Co. to look for two species: Chihuahuan Raven and Cassin's Sparrow. While we found no Ravens, we did find several Cassin's Sparrows.

All of the Cassin's Sparrows were found in sandy sage prairie habitat. At least six were found, in four different locations. The birds were located most easily by their skylarking behavior, although the song, once heard, is also useful for locating birds. Indeed, Doug Rose found the first Cassin's Sparrow by song. Once located, we were able to study individuals …
