The Problems And Prospects Of The Kimberley Pastoral Industry, R B. Hacker
The Problems And Prospects Of The Kimberley Pastoral Industry, R B. Hacker
Resource management technical reports
The pastoral industry in the Kimberley region began in the early 1880s withthe introduction of cattle overlanded from Queensland and New South Wales into the East Kimberley and with the almost simultaneous introduction, by sea, ofboth sheep and cattle into the Fitzroy Valley.Occupation of the more accessible areas was gradually achieved by theprogressive extension of these two arms of settlement which ultimately metaround the present location of Fitzroy Crossing. Extensive development of themore rugged areas of the North Kimberley came later with the construction ofreasonable access roads to the few isolated stations which had been initiallyestablished in this area.

Serradella species and strain evaluation trials. Aim: There are only two strains of serradella available commercially in Australia, Ornithopus compressus, Pitman and Uniserra. There have been approximately 400 strains of the different serradella species collected by Australian scientists and their European colleagues in the Mediterranean region. The aim of these experiments was to screen a selection from this collection in an attempt to broaden the genetic diversity of serradella available commercially. Serradella germination trial. Aim: To measure per cent germination in selected strains of serradella species, with ± pods. Trifolium brachycalycinum hardseed experiment. Results of 1981 sown experiment (1982 not yet …

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
CONCLUSIONS This trial has confirmed the field observation that 2,4,5-T whilst giving good initial control of Pennyroyal, fails after a number of years. Round up has a far longer term effect. This can only be attributed to a more complete initial kill as both herbicides are essentially non residual. Further work needs to be conducted on Round up in combination with soil residual chemicals or multiple applications to overcome the problem of reinfestation from seed reserves. 81A1 -01

82 AL 60, Clover scorch fungicide trials. Aim: Test a range of new fungicides for clover scorch control in comparison with Benlate. Comments: DPX 164-2 and Bavistin gave excellent disease control even at the lower rate. Benlate and Tilt were still satisfactory but control was not as good at the lower rate. Bayleton and Baycor gave some disease control but only at the higher rate. Cercospora leaf spot could be found on most plots with careful search. Economically important damage has occurred only on a few plots. Pseudopeziza leaf spot was notably absent during this season compared with others. 83 …

The excessive amounts of nutrients entering the Peel-Harvey Estuarine system have resulted in a marked increase in the abundance of algal species .within the estuary and reduced production on the sandy coastal soils of the catchment from which the nutrients are being leached. Recent stream samplings by D.C.E have shown that the deep grey Bassendean sands may be contributing up to 40 per cent of the total P loading in the Harvey River. Agriculture Department trials around Albany on similar sands have shown that up to 80 per cent of the bicarb extractable P may be lost after only 150 …
