The purpose. of these summaries is to demonstrate that a high level of genetic resistance to MSX has been acquired in lab-bred oysters in Virginia waters. The brood stocks were selected from survivors of James River seed oysters that were 90% killed in the early 1960's on private beds in Mobjack Bay. Only data from the years 1976 to 1980 are given in this summary, although comparable data have been accumulated since 1964 when laboratory· breeding began.

The weather continues to occur in extremes that interfere with growth and survival of oysters in the Chesapeake Bay. First there was a very wet year in 1979 (some 63-65 inches annual rainfall), much of which occurred in excessive amounts (some 15 inches) between late September and early November. Oysters in the upper James River seed-oyster area were killed by prolonged exposure to fresh or near-fresh waters in fall and winter of 1979-80.

This manuscript discusses the results of the first two and one half years of a three-year study designed to determine the present state of xenobiotic compounds in the Chesapeake Bay. It shows that polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are the most frequently encountered compounds and are the most abundant. Concentrations are highest in the Northern Bay with several sources implicated. During this study an apparent dumping of the pesticide, DDT, occurred. Either the quantity disposed of was small enough or the assimulation capacity was large enough that no adverse effects were noted. The detection by us of 6-phenyldodecane in bottom sediments of …

A study of portions of two leased oyster planting grounds adjacent to the construction site of the additional lanes of the James River Bridge was conducted in October 1980. Sampling with patent tongs indicated that on one lease oysters existed in medium commercial density while the other lease had no oysters. The fathometer showed a fairly even bottom with no evidence of large holes. Audio gear was used to indicate the nature and the contents of the bottom between patent tong sampling sites.

Parker Creek is a branched tidal creek located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. In its southern branch, the creek receives waste inputs from a poultry processing plant. A study has been conducted to determine the effects of these inputs and to formulate a mathematical model of the creek system suitable for water quality planning. The model and field studies show the creek may be divided into two zones, an upstream zone dominated by freshwater flows and waste inputs, and a downstream zone dominated by conditions in adjacent Metomkin Bay. A study of the. shellfish resoμrce near the proposed site of the I-664 bridge-tunnel across Hampton Roads was conducted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in September 1980, Bottom samples collected with patent tongs in a corridor surrounding the proposed site indicated the following:

l. The oyster population was negligible;

2. Medium and high densities of hard clams occurred in the Northern part of the study area,. generally between Newport News Point and Middle Ground; and,

3. Density South of Middle Ground was low.
