Revised Checklist Of North American Mammals North Of Mexico, 1979, J. Knox Jones Jr., Dilford C. Carter, Hugh H. Genoways Dec 1979

Revised Checklist Of North American Mammals North Of Mexico, 1979, J. Knox Jones Jr., Dilford C. Carter, Hugh H. Genoways

Mammalogy Papers: University of Nebraska State Museum

Faunal checklists provide useful ready references for many kinds of endeavors, both in the laboratory and in the field, and are particularly helpful to students. Since publication more than four years ago of a "Revised checklist of North American mammals north of Mexico" (Jones et al., 1975), demand for that list has exceeded the supply set aside for general distribution; additionally, systematic studies of mammals published since 1974 necessitate changes in the list. Primarily for these reasons, a newly revised checklist of mammalian species occurring in the Nearctic to the north of Mexico is here presented. As in this and ...

Variation In Pappogeomys Castanops (Geomyidae) On The Llano Estacado Of Texas And New Mexico, Robert C. Dowler, Hugh H. Genoways Dec 1979

Variation In Pappogeomys Castanops (Geomyidae) On The Llano Estacado Of Texas And New Mexico, Robert C. Dowler, Hugh H. Genoways

Mammalogy Papers: University of Nebraska State Museum

Nongeographic and geographic variation in the yellow-cheeked pocket gopher, Pappogeomys castanops, were analyzed in specimens collected in northwestern Texas and eastern New Mexico. Univariate and multivariate methods of analysis were utilized to assess variation in morphometric characters among 12 samples of P. castanops. Because of significant variation with age, only adult specimens were used in analyses. Adult males were significantly larger than females in all 13 characters studied. Our analyses of geographic variation reveal that those specimens previously assigned to the subspecies P. c. simulans are not sufficiently distinct to warrant subspecific designation.

Predation Of Upland Game And Its Management, Roger Wells Dec 1979

Predation Of Upland Game And Its Management, Roger Wells

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

There is probably no greater topic that elicits greater emotion in public wildlife discussions than that of predation. A variety of groups each with their own particular special interest surround the topic.

Some advocate complete protection of predators on the premise that their activities merely result in a "balance of nature." The opposite viewpoint argue just as strongly for the total elimination of Predators of valued wildlife in order to have greater number for man's enjoyment.

Effects Of Fecally Contaminated Feed By Starlings On Growing Swine & Mice, Pat Schuster Dec 1979

Effects Of Fecally Contaminated Feed By Starlings On Growing Swine & Mice, Pat Schuster

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The effects of feed contamination by droppings of starlings (Sturnis vulgaris) on certain growth parameters in swine (Sus scrofa) were measured from January 25 to March 1, 1979 at the Western Kentucky University farm. Weight gain, feed-conversion efficiency and feed rejection by swine fed varying levels of contaminated feed were analyzed and found to be non-significant at the fecal concentrations used.

Laboratory mice (Mus musculus) were fed varying concentrations of starling feces in standard mouse chow; weight gain, feed-conversion efficiency and feed rejection were measured. At 0%, 10%, 25% and 50% concentrations, significant differences in weight gains at the 0 ...

Cyanogenesis In Indiangrass Seedlings, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, Kenneth P. Vogel Dec 1979

Cyanogenesis In Indiangrass Seedlings, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, Kenneth P. Vogel

Agronomy & Horticulture -- Faculty Publications

In a study of seedlings of 72 entries representing 39 species, 14 genera, and 2 tribes of grasses, only entries of the genus Sorghastrum were found to contain the cyanogenic glucoside, dhurrin [(S)-p-hydroxymandelonitrile β-D-glucopyranoside]. Dhurrin was found in seedlings of each of the 10 entries of indiangrass [Sorghastrum mutans (L) Nash] and the three entries of S. pellitum.
Seedlings of five indiangrass cultivars were assayed for dhurrin concentration. Levels expressed as HCN potential (HCN-p) ranged from about 900 ppm for 'Holt' to about 1,200 ppm for 'Llano' and 'Oto'.
Further studies with Oto seedlings indicated that first leaves ...

A Water Quality Modeling Study Of Lynnhaven Bay, Virginia, A. Y. Kuo, P. V. Hyer Dec 1979

A Water Quality Modeling Study Of Lynnhaven Bay, Virginia, A. Y. Kuo, P. V. Hyer

Reports

The City of Virginia Beach has proposed channel dredging in the Eastern Branch of the Lynnhaven Bay for the purposes of recreations and drainage improvement. It is therefore necessary to examine the possible environmental results of such a project. This environmental assessment is complicated by another proposal to modify the Lynnhaven system. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has proposed adding a second canal leading to the Eastern Branch, in order to reduce flood damage. This canal project would affect the Lynnhaven system by increasing nonpoint sources of pollution and by increasing the tidal prism. The water quality consequences ...

Sublethal Stress In Escherichia-Coli - Function Of Salinity, Ic Anderson, Mw Rhodes, H Kator Dec 1979

Sublethal Stress In Escherichia-Coli - Function Of Salinity, Ic Anderson, Mw Rhodes, H Kator

VIMS Articles

Sublethal stress in Escherichia coli was detected in various test media after exposure (in vitro) to seawater of various salinities. Stress was measured with an electrochemical detection technique and a,-galactosidase assay. Test media included EC medium, medium A-1, and tryptic soy broth modified to contain lactose for /?-galactosidase assay experiments. Stress was defined as the difference between a predicted electrochemical response time calculated for unstarved cells from a standard curve and the observed electrochemical response time for cells starved in seawater. The higher the salinity, the greater the stress for all test media examined. Stress was most pronounced in ...

Eastern Wheatbelt Farm Economics, Peter Eckersley Nov 1979

Eastern Wheatbelt Farm Economics, Peter Eckersley

Soil conservation survey collection

This booklet outlines the current cost structure and profitability of a farm in the eastern wheatbelt. Rather than being figures for an 'average farm', they reflect the use of practices widely recommended by the Department of Agriculture on a typical property in the area. This does not mean the Department of Agriculture believes every farm in the area should be run this way. The best way to run any particular farm depends on the resources and objectives of that farmer.

Effects Of Combination Drug Therapy On The Subcutaneous And Pulmonary Growth Of A Slow And A Fast-Growing C3h/He Mammary Carcinoma, J. Vaage, Mary E. Costanza Nov 1979

Effects Of Combination Drug Therapy On The Subcutaneous And Pulmonary Growth Of A Slow And A Fast-Growing C3h/He Mammary Carcinoma, J. Vaage, Mary E. Costanza

Women’s Health Research Faculty Publications

Changes in susceptibility to treatment with Cytoxan, methotrexate, 5-fluorouracil, and Adriamycin, single or in combination, have been studied during the initial and progressive stages of s.c. and pulmonary (via tail vein injection) growth of two transplanted syngeneic C3H/He mammary carcinomas. One tumor was fast growing, reaching a size of 3 mm from a 1-mm s.c. implant in 7 days; the second tumor would grow to the same size in 30 days. The tumor with the slower growth rate was more susceptible to drug treatment, manifested by delayed growth as well as by prevented growth. The slower-growing tumor ...

Significance Of Hemolytic Activity Of Some Radiation- Resistant Micrococci In Food, Ardyce Welch, R. Burt Maxcy Nov 1979

Significance Of Hemolytic Activity Of Some Radiation- Resistant Micrococci In Food, Ardyce Welch, R. Burt Maxcy

Faculty Publications in Food Science and Technology

Micrococci resistant to 1 Mrad ofgamma radiation were isolated from irradiated chicken. Three isolates were hemolytic on blood agar plates and were selected for further study. Two other radiation-resistant micrococci, Micrococcus radiodurans and Micrococcus radiophilus, were included in the study because there is only a very limited amount of information regarding hemolytic activity of these organisms and their potential role of public health importance. Tests to determine hemolytic patterns, hemolytic activity of extracellular substances, leukocytic activity, presence of enzymes commonly associated with pathogenicity (coagulase, deoxyribonuclease, phosphatase), and pathogenicity for laboratory animals all suggested that the organisms would not be of ...

Reproductive Characteristics Of Boars During And After Exposure To Increased Ambient Temperature , R. P. Wettemann, M. E. Wells, R. K. Johnson

Faculty Papers and Publications in Animal Science

Reproductive performance of 12 11-month-old Yorkshire boars was determined during and after exposure to control or increased ambient temperatures. After 3 weeks adjustment at 23 C in temperature controlled chambers, six boars were heat stressed by exposure to 34.5 ± 1.0 C for 8 hr and 31.0 ± 1.0 C for 16 hr during each 24-hr period and six control boars were maintained at 23.0 ± 1.0 C for 11 weeks. All boars were subsequently exposed to 23 C for 6 weeks. Semen was collected twice weekly before, during and after heat stress and boars were naturally ...
