Review Of Seismic Characteristics In Erbil City, The Capital Of The Kurdistan Region Of Iraq, Zina A. Abduljaleel, Bahman O. Taha
Polytechnic Journal
Erbil city essentially suffers from the risk of earthquakes generated by Zagros-Taurus Belt. The central objective of this study is to identify the seismic characteristics and required seismic parameters for structural analysis. The methodology concentrated on reviewing the seismology and geology of Erbil city. It was concluded that the tectonically classified by an outer platform of the low folded zone in the position of Western Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt of the Arabian plate, geologically covered by Quaternary sediments and lithologically described by fluvial sediments, and the dynamic soil properties classified by site Class D. Seismicity review indicated that the seismic source …

Desert Pool {If Every Desert Was Once A Sea}, Karen Miranda Abel
Desert Pool {If Every Desert Was Once A Sea}, Karen Miranda Abel
The Goose
Desert Pool {If every desert was once a sea} is a site-specific art project by Canadian artist Karen Miranda Abel completed in 2016 while artist-in-residence at Joya: arte + ecología, an arts-led research centre situated in an alpine desert within a national park in southern Spain. The elemental installation represents an envisioning of the ancient sea that occupied the Sierra de María-Los Vélez Natural Park millions of years before the current desert ecology, a time when its highest mountain peaks may have been islands.
New Clues To A Mass Extinction: Colby Geologist Robert Gastaldo And Student Researchers Unearth Evidence That Contradicts Prevailing Models About Ancient Die-Offs, Stephen Collins
Colby Magazine
Colby geologists are rewriting deep time history, altering the script of how scientists understand the mother of all mass extinctions—the End-Permian event that occurred approximately 252 million years ago. Or to suggest that they don’t, in fact, understand it.

Midwestern Geology And Cornell College: The First 125 Years, Gene E. Hinman, Paul L. Garvin
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The history of geology at Cornell College can be traced back almost to the college's beginnings. Though not the first to reach geology at Cornell, William Harmon Norton, more than any other person, shaped the Department of Geology and set it on its course of excellence. Born in 1856, the son of a Methodist minister, Norton developed an ardent interest in geology in his boyhood. A graduate of Cornell in Classics, Norton was hired by his alma mater in 1876 to reach Greek, bur his avocation was geology. He spent most of his spare time on weekends and during summers …
The Contributions Of J. A. Udden To An Understanding Of Iowa Geology, Richard C. Anderson
The Contributions Of J. A. Udden To An Understanding Of Iowa Geology, Richard C. Anderson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Johan August Udden served on the faculty of Augustana College from 1888 until 1911. His research during that time was directed toward an understanding of the geology of areas close at hand, the region around Rock Island and nearby areas in Iowa and Illinois. Udden's most significant contributions to Iowa geology were in his treatment of 1) Paleozoic, Cretaceous, and Quaternary stratigraphy; 2) subsurface geology, including information on bedrock elevations and topography; 3) characteristics and origin of the loess. Most of this information was included in the Annual Reports of the Iowa Geological Survey published between 1899 and 1903. He …

High Precision, High Spatial Resolution Analysis Of Sulfur Isotopes By Laser Combustion Of Natural Sulfide Minerals, S. P. Kelley, A. E. Fallick, P. Mcconville, A. J. Boyce
High Precision, High Spatial Resolution Analysis Of Sulfur Isotopes By Laser Combustion Of Natural Sulfide Minerals, S. P. Kelley, A. E. Fallick, P. Mcconville, A. J. Boyce
Scanning Microscopy
Laser induced combustion provides a powerful new technique for sulfur isotope measurements in natural sulfides. A high power continuous laser, focused through a modified microscope system onto a sulfide mineral target, produces highly localized heating. The laser beam is focused to a spot 25 μm in diameter at the sample surface. In the presence of low pressure oxygen, temperatures at the centre of the spot are sufficiently high to produce localized oxidation. Resultant SO2 is transferred to a gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometer, where the 𝛿34S can be measured to a precision better than 0.25‰. Sulfur …
Geology Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii, R. G. Baker
Geology Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii, R. G. Baker
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Fens are peatlands which are dependent on groundwater discharge to provide nutrient enrichment. Fens are found in a variety of landscape positions and in most Iowa landform regions. This paper presents a classification system for Iowa fens based on landscape position, stratigraphy, and hydrologic factors. Iowa fens can be separated into six categories: 1) fens along valley wall slopes; the groundwater source for these fens is sand and gravel buried between glacial tills (inter-till); 2) fens in hummocky topography on the northwestern margin of the Des Moines Lobe landform region; the water source is sand and gravel buried within glacial …

The versatility of the PIXE method with microbeams of protons as a non-destructive, in-situ probe for trace element analysis in the geosciences has been demonstrated in an ever increasing number of cases. While in most applications the method can be considered as derivative or as an extension of electron microprobe methodology, features unique to the proton microprobe enable new approaches to hitherto intractable problems of analysis. An appropriate niche has been established in igneous mineralogy and petrology, with important implications both in the basic geosciences as well as mineral industry applications, particularly in the diamond exploration industry. This paper reviews …

Microcharacterization Of Fluid Inclusions In Minerals By Raman Microprobe, J. C. Touray, C. Beny-Bassez, J. Dubessy, N. Guilhaumou
Scanning Electron Microscopy
Fluids trapped in inclusions in minerals are micro-amounts of ore-forming media composed of water, dissolved salts, gases and sometimes liquefied gases, liquid, hydrocarbons and solids. The aim of this paper is to summarize the contribution of the Raman scattering microspectrometry to the knowledge of fluid inclusions. After a review of the composition of fluid inclusions and a short presentation of microthermometrical investigations, a description of the Raman microprobe is given. Applications are reviewed; identification of ionic species dissolved in aqueous phase, characterization of gases of C-O-H-N-S system, identification of solids and non aqueous liquids. The complementary characteristics of Raman microanalysis …
