This report for the Avon Natural Resource Management Strategy provides an assessment of the current status of land resources throughout the Avon River Basin in Western Australia. Townsite salinity affects more than 40 towns in the WA wheatbelt. Waterlogging and salinity are responsible for damamge to townsite infrastructure. Through groundwater pumping and desalination, the State Salinity Council (now the Natural Resource Management Council) granted Merredin the the chance to prevent further damage to the townsite by funding this project.

This report summarises the outcomes of a project initiated to examine the potential to integrate high water use plant options into existing farm systems to combat rising watertables and reduce salinity and waterlogging. Planting options investigated include commercial trees, perennials, fodder shrubs, annual crops and native grasses. The research uses a new GIS based methodology for undertaking catchment scale land capability analyses.

Esperance Downs Research Station (EDRS) was established in 1949 as an experimental farm. Knowledge from trials on the station has been instrumental in development of agriculture throughout the Esperance region. However, land degradation and in particular secondary salinity became widespread by the 1980s. With potential for similar problems to develop in the region, the EDRS rehabilitation program began in 1990/91. This report details the objectives of this project along with implementation procedures and an assessment of its achievements.
