Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Calcium intake during early adolescence falls short of requirements for maximum bone accretion. Parents and the home food environment potentially influence children’s calcium intakes. This study aimed to quantify parental psychosocial factors (PSF) predicting calcium intakes of Asian, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic white (NHW) early adolescent children from a parental perspective.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving the administration of a validated calcium-specific food frequency questionnaire to a convenience sample of children aged 10–13 years and the primary individual responsible for food acquisition in the child’s household. Based on Social Cognitive Theory, parental factors potentially associated with children’s calcium …

Is Mycoplasma Bovis In Sand Bedding Infectious To Dairy Calves?, David J. Wilson, Thomas J. Baldwin Oct 2018

Is Mycoplasma Bovis In Sand Bedding Infectious To Dairy Calves?, David J. Wilson, Thomas J. Baldwin

All Current Publications

Mycoplasmas are unusual bacteria that can infect all ages of cattle, and can cause arthritis, pneumonia, and death. Infected dairy cows may also contract mastitis, metritis, or virtually cease milk production. The most common mycoplasma affecting cattle is M. bovis; there are several other Mycoplasma spp. as well. Because standard microbial culture methods do not isolate Mycoplasma spp., special laboratory methods are needed for diagnosis. Mycoplasma spreads by inhalation and respiratory secretions and also at milking time via contaminated inflations in milking units. Mycoplasma spp. have also been detected in straw, sand, recycled manure, and other bedding, often associated …

Pederson, Ylva M. Ardo, Jeff Broadbent, Horst Neve, Lars H. Hansen, Fabio Dal Bello, Hilde M. Østlie, Hans P. Kleppen, Finn K. Vogensen, Helge Holo

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Undefined mesophilic mixed (DL-type) starter cultures are composed of predominantly Lactococcus lactis subspecies and 1–10% Leuconostoc spp. The composition of the Leuconostoc population in the starter culture ultimately affects the characteristics and the quality of the final product. The scientific basis for the taxonomy of dairy relevant leuconostocs can be traced back 50 years, and no documentation on the genomic diversity of leuconostocs in starter cultures exists. We present data on the Leuconostoc population in five DL-type starter cultures commonly used by the dairy industry. The analyses were performed using traditional cultivation methods, and further augmented by next-generation DNA sequencing …

Using A Rising Plate Meter To Determine Paddock Size For Rotational Grazing, Jennifer W. Macadam, Sara R. Hunt Oct 2015

Using A Rising Plate Meter To Determine Paddock Size For Rotational Grazing, Jennifer W. Macadam, Sara R. Hunt

All Current Publications

For rotational grazing of pastures to be most successful, it’s important to match pasture production to ruminant intake, because both can change during the grazing season. This publication shows how a rising plate meter can be used to calculate available pasture dry matter, allowing pasture managers to optimize pasture utilization and ruminant production on pasture.

A large number of Holstein bull (steer) calves are produced by the dairy industry. Producers who purchase these calves should understand that depending on the production strategy employed, the economic outcome could be quite broad. Dairy beef calves that are intensively managed, using aggressive feeding strategies to achieve high levels of efficiency, increase the opportunity for profitability.

Videotape - 'The Milkingschool', Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

We recently produced a videotape here at USU, titled ìThe Milking School.î It contains both English and Spanish language versions (30 and 33 minutes). The videotape is focused on teaching novice personnel how to milk cows. There is a brief overview of milking equipment and a small segment on handling cows. Most of the information is on the step by step procedure of cow preparation and management of the milking equipment on the cow. The goal was to avoid ìtalking heads and show the cows, equipment, workers and very specific steps - and to make it available in Spanish as …

Helping Dairy Producers Reduce The Scc, Clell Bagley Jan 2000

Helping Dairy Producers Reduce The Scc, Clell Bagley

All Current Publications

Practicing veterinarians are in an excellent position to help dairy producers recognize and deal with the problem of elevated somatic cell counts (SCC). Yet they are seldom asked to assist. A high SCC is an indication of chronic, subclinical mastitis in the herd and is also an indication of significant economic losses.

Bulletin No. 382 - Grass-Legume Mixtures For Irrigated Pastures For Dairy Cows, George Q. Bateman, Wesley Keller Mar 1956

Bulletin No. 382 - Grass-Legume Mixtures For Irrigated Pastures For Dairy Cows, George Q. Bateman, Wesley Keller

UAES Bulletins

Pastures have been important in the agricultural economy of the Intermountain Region. But as long as nearby valley bottom or other land not well suited for cultivation was available, the pressure for better irrigated pastures remained secondary to that for improved cash crops.
Only in recent years have dairymen generally realized that a productive herd, coupled with proper management, could make a good pasture a highly profitable crop. Bateman and Packer pointed out in 1945 this concept of pastures. Bateman et al. using newer mixtures strikingly verified the concept in 1949 and 1954. The growing awareness of the value …

Bulletin No. 239 - Wet Beet Pulp Compared With Corn Silage In The Dairy Ration, George Q. Bateman, George B. Caine Nov 1932

Bulletin No. 239 - Wet Beet Pulp Compared With Corn Silage In The Dairy Ration, George Q. Bateman, George B. Caine

UAES Bulletins

Wet beet pulp coming as a by-product from the sugar-beet industry in Utah is fed in varying amounts to dairy cows. Corn silage is also used to make up part of the dairy ration. Conflicting statements as to the value of the one feed as compared to the other indicated the need of more knowledge as to the value of pulp as compared to silage in the dairy ration. For this reason a study of the problem was initiated in February, 1926.

Circular No. 87 - Raising Dairy Calves, George B. Caine Jun 1930

Circular No. 87 - Raising Dairy Calves, George B. Caine

UAES Circulars

Too much importance cannot be given to the number and kind of calves raised. The life of an average cow is 6.5 years. To maintain the present number of cows in Utah about 15,385 heifer calves should be raised annually. One-half of all calves born are males and are usually disposed of in a few weeks; the other 50 per cent are females from which selection must be made to maintain the herds. In many parts of Utah the number of dairy cows should be increased and probably the best way to accomplish this is to raise carefully selected calves.

Bulletin No. 190 - Corn Silage In A Dairy Ration, W. E. Carroll

UAES Bulletins

In 1914 a study of the value of corn silage in the dairy ration was undertaken at this station. The first phase of the general question to receive attention was the effect of adding silage to a basal ration of alfalfa hay and grain.

Bulletin No. 79 - Process Butter: A Dairy Fraud, R. W. Clark, John A. Crockett Jan 1903

Bulletin No. 79 - Process Butter: A Dairy Fraud, R. W. Clark, John A. Crockett

UAES Bulletins

A fraud which threatens to work great injury to the dairy interests of Utah, has made its appearance. It is a churning process by which the yield of butter can be abnormally increased by incorporating a large quantity of water and casein. A report has reached the Experiment Station to the effect that the promoters of this churning process are successfully enlisting the interest of Utah farmers and are selling county rights at fabulous prices.

This bulletin is issued only as a word of warning to those who would be entrapped. It is not probable that butter made according to …

Bulletin No. 57 - By-Products Of The Dairy, F. B. Linfield Jun 1898

Bulletin No. 57 - By-Products Of The Dairy, F. B. Linfield

UAES Bulletins

Soon after becoming connected with the Station, the writer, from observations made in various parts of the State, was impressed with the necessity for investigation looking to the profitable disposal of the by-products of the dairy, both at the factory and on the farm. The common method at the factories seemed to be to feed hogs on milk or whey alone, and where grain was fed, it was only given to finish the hog for market. This method of management did not appear to be successful, for it generally took the whole season to get one crop of hogs ready …
