A Comprehensive Genetic Linkage Map Of The Human Genome, Nih/Ceph Collaborators Mapping Group, Helen Donis-Keller

Helen Donis-Keller

A genetic linkage map of the human genome was constructed that consists of 1416 loci, including 279 genes and expressed sequences. The loci are represented by 1676 polymorphic systems genotyped with the CEPH reference pedigree resource. A total of 339 microsatellite repeat markers assayed by PCR are contained within the map, and of the 351 markers with heterozygosities of at least 70%, 205 are microsatellites. Seven telomere loci define physical and genetic endpoints for 2q, 4p, 7q, 8p, 14q, 16p, and 16q, and in other cases distal markers on the maps have been localized to terminal cytogenetic bands. Therefore, at …

Aerosolized Pseudomonas Elastase And Lung Fluid Balance In Anesthetized Sheep, B. T. Peterson, M. L. Collins, L. D. Gray, Ali Azghani Apr 1992

Aerosolized Pseudomonas Elastase And Lung Fluid Balance In Anesthetized Sheep, B. T. Peterson, M. L. Collins, L. D. Gray, Ali Azghani

Ali Azghani

The role of the lung epithelium in lung fluid balance was studied by ventilating anesthetized sheep with an aerosol of 20 mg of elastase from Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Ps. elastase) to increase lung epithelial permeability without affecting lung endothelial permeability or lung vascular pressures. Ps. elastase had no effect on the lung vascular pressures, the alveolar-arterial PO2 gradient (A-aPO2), the flow or protein concentration of the lung lymph, or the postmortem water volume of the lungs. The morphological alveolar flooding score in these sheep was 2.5 times the control level, but this was only marginally significant. Elevation of the left atrial …

Effects Of The Argentine Ant On Arthropod Fauna Of Hawaiian High-Elevation Shrubland, F Cole, Arthur Madeiros, Lloyd Loope, William Zuehlke

F. Russell Cole

Human-caused biological invasions by an alien species are a worldwide phenomenon. They are particularly significant on isolated oceanic islands and represent a serious threat to endemic biota. The Argentine ant (Iridomyrmex humilis) has become established in portions of the high-elevation shrubland of Haleakala National Park, Maui, Hawaii, over the past 25 yr. This ecosystem lacks native ants but possesses many locally endemic and rare anthropod species. Pitfall trapping and under-rock surveys were conducted to determine the effects of I. humilis on the local arthropod fauna. More than 180 taxa were sampled, mostly Arthropoda. Presence of the Argentine ant is associated …

Auxin-Induced H+-Pump Stimulation Does Not Depend On The Presence Of Epidermal Cells In Corn Coleoptiles, Winfried Peters, Ursula Richter, Hubert Felle Dec 1991

Auxin-Induced H+-Pump Stimulation Does Not Depend On The Presence Of Epidermal Cells In Corn Coleoptiles, Winfried Peters, Ursula Richter, Hubert Felle

Winfried S. Peters

Cell-wall acidification and electrical reactions (depolarization and hyperpolarization) are typical auxin responses in maize (Zea mays L.) coleoptiles. In an attempt to test the role of the outer epidermis in these responses, they have been measured and compared in intact and peeled coleoptile fragments. To exclude interactions between parenchymal and epidermal cells, the coleoptile pieces were completely stripped of their outer epidermis. This preparation was monitored by means of a scanning electron microscope. When externally applied indole-3-acetic acid was tested, we found that neither cell-wall acidification nor the electrical membrane responses depended on the presence of intact epidermal cells.

Association Of Tetrapyrrole Intermediates In The Bacteriochlorophyll A Biosynthetic Pathway With The Major Outer-Membrane Porin Protein Of Rhodobacter Capsulatus, David W. Bollivar, Carl E. Bauer Dec 1991

Association Of Tetrapyrrole Intermediates In The Bacteriochlorophyll A Biosynthetic Pathway With The Major Outer-Membrane Porin Protein Of Rhodobacter Capsulatus, David W. Bollivar, Carl E. Bauer

David Bollivar

Rhodobacter capsulatus regulates synthesis of bacteriochlorophyll a in response to changes in oxygen partial pressure and light intensity. One early model proposed that this regulation involved a carrier polypeptide that functions to tether tetrapyrrole intermediates to the membrane. In the present study we isolated tetrapyrrole intermediates accumulated in three strains of R. capsulatus that contain mutations which block bacteriochlorophyll a biosynthesis at different steps of the magnesium branch of the pathway. Each of the tetrapyrrole intermediates was shown to be associated with the same 32 kDa polypeptide, as indicated by similar electrophoretic mobility and antigenic cross-reactivity with polyclonal antisera. The …
