Species Limits Within The Mexican Garter Snakes Of The Thamnophis Godmani Complex, Douglas A. Rossman, Frank T. Burbrink
Species Limits Within The Mexican Garter Snakes Of The Thamnophis Godmani Complex, Douglas A. Rossman, Frank T. Burbrink
Occasional Papers of the Museum of Natural Science, Louisiana State University
The highly variable Thamniphis godmani complex of southern Mexico, comprised of four apparently allopatric populations, was examined by using 28 morphological characters scored on 214 specimens. Character values were tested with univariate and multivariate statistics to determine if populations are morphologically distinct. The results suggest that the four populations represent independently evolving lineages. Four species, three previously undescribed, are recognized in the T. godmani complex. A lectotype is designated for T. godmani. For each species, a diagnosis description of holotype or lectotype, summary of interspecific variation, and statement of distribution are provided. Comparisons are made with T. errans, alleged to …

Listeria monocytogenes has been recognized as a human pathogen since 1929. This pathogen is found in many foods and listeriosis infections affect approximately 2,500 people in the United States each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of those infected with L. monocytogenes approximately 500 die as a result of the illness. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium, commonly found in water, soil, plant material, animals and human. Today, different methods are used by food manufacturers, to reduce the risk of Listeria monocytogenes, such as antimicrobial agents, heating, irradiation, and fermentation. The ability of the bacteria to grow …
Development Of Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert Containing Soy Protein And Coconut Milk, Luciana Soler
Development Of Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert Containing Soy Protein And Coconut Milk, Luciana Soler
LSU Master's Theses
As consumers have pursued healthier lifestyles in recent years, consumption of soy foods has risen steadily, encouraged by scientific studies showing health benefits from these products. There is a large market for ice cream in the United States. However, since ice cream contains dairy ingredients, a number of Americans are not able to consume it because of dietary habits due to religious beliefs, lactose intolerance, vegetarianism or other related ideologies. For years, these groups of consumers have been able to substitute ice cream with frozen desserts containing soy protein as a substitute for milk protein, but never in the United …

Ozone Degradation Of Off-Flavors In Catfish, Tameka Lashon Dew
LSU Master's Theses
In the United States aquaculture is a billion dollar industry. Aquaculture is essentially the production of aquatic organisms under controlled conditions. Although conditions are controlled to a certain degree, absolute control is not possible. This reason alone is a huge problem that can cost the industry millions of dollars a year. In catfish, geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol are two compounds are primarily responsible for imparting a musty/earthy off-flavor. Off- flavors are secondary metabolites of some blue-green algae and actinomycete bacteria. When present in fish tissue they create an undesirable taste. Different approaches have been used in order to alleviate the problem …
Characteristics Of Reduced Fat Milks As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, Kamalesh Achanta
Characteristics Of Reduced Fat Milks As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, Kamalesh Achanta
LSU Master's Theses
Folic acid plays an important role in the prevention of neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly, heart defects, facial clefts, urinary abnormalities and limb deficiencies. Milk and milk products serve as a potential source for folic acid fortification due to the presence of folate binding proteins which seem to be involved in the folate bioavailability. Though milk is a not a good source of folic acid, fortification could help in the prevention of the above mentioned defects. The objective of this study was to examine the physico-chemical characteristics of reduced fat milks fortified with folic acid. Reduced …

Economic Evaluation Of Potential Changes In Farm Program Price Support For Typical Louisiana Rice And Cotton Farming Operations, Manuel E. Aldana
LSU Master's Theses
Increased government deficit has led the congress to reduce federal spending. Proposed budget cuts are intended to decrease government spending in several areas, including agriculture. Reductions in farm program spending could cause significant adverse effects on the financial situation of many farms, particularly to rice and cotton enterprises, due to their high reliance on farm program payments as a source of income. Representative rice and cotton operations of one, two, three, and four entities as single crop enterprises were considered and developed for use in this study. Farm enterprise sizes were determined by estimating the acreage level at which a …

Effect Of Chromium Propionate And Fat Source On Growth, Carcass Traits, And Meat Quality In Swine And The Effect Of Chromium Propionate On Growth And Carcass Traits In Broilers, Ashunti Ria Jackson
LSU Master's Theses
Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of the chromium propionate (CrProp) in swine and poultry diets. Two broiler experiments, each utilizing 1,460 Ross X Ross broilers, were conducted to evaluate the effects of 0, 200, 400, or 800 ppb CrProp on growth performance and carcass traits in 0 to 42 and 0 to 49 d-old broilers. In Exp. 1, 400 ppb Cr decreased (P < 0.10) ADG and G:F in the grower phase, but mortality was reduced (P < 0.10) in broilers fed 200 ppb or 800 ppb Cr. In the finisher phase, G:F was increased (P < 0.10) in broilers fed all dietary levels of Cr, and mortality was reduced (P < 0.10) in broilers fed 200 and 400 ppb Cr. Chromium did not affect the overall growth data or carcass traits. In Exp. 2, CrProp did not affect growth performance. The results indicated that Cr as CrProp improved G:F in the later phases of growth and reduced mortality in Exp. 1 but not in Exp. 2. In Exp. 3, 108 crossbred Yorkshire gilts were used to examine the effects of 0 or 200 ppb CrProp on iodine value, fatty acid profile of fat, growth, carcass traits, and pork quality from gilts fed tallow or choice white grease (CWG). Chromium decreased (P < 0.03) 10th rib back fat and increased (P < 0.02) percent muscle. Gain:feed was increased (P < 0.003) and ADFI decreased by fat addition. Fat increased hot carcass weight (P < 0.07) and dressing percent (P < 0.02). Average back fat, 9th rib CL, and total loss were decreased (P = 0.02 to 0.04) by tallow. Belly width was increased (P < 0.08) by tallow, but belly bending on both the teatline and scribe side were increased (P = 0.004 to 0.01) by CWG. Iodine values on belly and loin samples were increased (P < 0.001) by CWG. Overall, Cr affected BF and percent muscle and the inclusion of tallow decreased (P = 0.03 to 0.09) belly and loin iodine value further than CWG or no added fat.

Antimicrobial Effect Of Cetylpyridinium Chloride Against Listeria Monocytogenes Growth On The Surface Of Raw And Cooked Shrimp, Tracie Michelle Dupard
LSU Master's Theses
Listeria monocytogenes has emerged as a major foodborne pathogen for the seafood industry due to its psychrotrophic nature and its ubiquitous presence. It has been isolated from soil, sewage, dead vegetative matter, aquatic environments, fecal material, fish, crustaceans, and domesticated animals. As a result, L. monocytogenes has been responsible for several shrimp recalls and has been epidemiologically linked to human listeriosis. Fresh seafood products are highly perishable and their shelf-life is limited by microbiological spoilage. Therefore, when pathogenic microorganisms are involved, it poses a health threat to the general public. The situation is further complicated because seafood processing plants are …
