Motivations And Satisfaction Of North Dakota Deer Hunters During A Temporal Decline In Deer Populations, Kristen E. Black, William F. Jensen, Robert Newman, Jason Boulanger

Biology Faculty Publications

Achieving state wildlife agency biological goals for deer (Odocoileus spp.) management may often conflict with hunter desires. Concomitantly, better information is needed to optimize agency deer herd management goals with hunters’ social goals. In 2016, we surveyed 3,000 North Dakota, USA, resident deer hunters using a self-administered mail survey to gain a better understanding of motivations, satisfaction, and hunter demographics that may be used to inform hunter recruitment and retention (HRR) efforts during a period of reduced statewide deer populations. With deer-gun license availability strictly limited, we explored the possibility that some gun hunters may have been engaging …

Prognostic Value Of D-Dimer And Markers Of Coagulation For Stratification Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Growth, Alexandra C. Sundermann, Keith Saum, Kelsey A. Conrad, Hannah M. Russell, Todd L. Edwards, Kevin Mani, Martin Björck, Anders Wanhainen, A. Phillip Owens Nov 2018

Prognostic Value Of D-Dimer And Markers Of Coagulation For Stratification Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Growth, Alexandra C. Sundermann, Keith Saum, Kelsey A. Conrad, Hannah M. Russell, Todd L. Edwards, Kevin Mani, Martin Björck, Anders Wanhainen, A. Phillip Owens

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is associated with high morbidity and mortality and is an established cause of unbalanced hemostasis. A number of hemostatic biomarkers have been associated with AAA; however, the utility of hemostatic biomarkers in AAA diagnosis and prognosis is unclear. The aim of the present study was to characterize the potential prognostic value of D-dimer and markers of altered hemostasis in a large cohort of patients with AAAs characterized by either fast or slow aneurysm growth (frequency matched for baseline diameter) and subaneurysmal dilations. We measured plasma concentrations of thrombin-antithrombin (TAT) complex, platelet factor 4 (PF4), and D-dimer …

Improving Health Through Diet And Exercise In Children, Elaine Rush, Tara Coppinger Sep 2018

Improving Health Through Diet And Exercise In Children, Elaine Rush, Tara Coppinger

Publications

We know that nutritious foods and quality physical activity are two of the fundamental needs for normal growth and development of children. Food based dietary guidelines and physical activity recommendations have universal evidence base but the teaching of fundamental movement skills is limited without support. Given the importance of prevention of childhood obesity the distal drivers also need to be examined including poverty. Interventions trialled in carefully controlled conditions while shown to have efficacy are not effective in the real world. There is a need for more research and rigorous evaluation of interventions in combinations of settings and with innovative …

Objective-PAR2 (protease-activated receptor 2)-dependent signaling results in augmented inflammation and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several autoimmune conditions. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of PAR2 deficiency on the development of atherosclerosis. Approach and Resutle-PAR2 mRNA and protein expression is increased in human carotid artery and mouse aortic arch atheroma versus control carotid and aortic arch arteries, respectively. To determine the effect of PAR2 deficiency on atherosclerosis, male and female low-density lipoprotein receptor-deficient (Ldlr-/-) mice (8-12 weeks old) that were Par2+/+ or Par2-/- were fed a fat-and cholesterol-enriched diet for 12 or 24 weeks. …

The Effect Of Team Sports In Classical, Christian Education, Hannah Grey Jun 2018

The Effect Of Team Sports In Classical, Christian Education, Hannah Grey

Masters Theses

Antoine de Saint-Exupery once noted if you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea (“A quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupery,” n.d.). This quote embodies the goal of classical education, but it also parallels the values taught in sport. There has been a resurgence of classical education in recent years, and these new schools are focusing on instilling in students a love for learning, a passion for truth and beauty, and a simultaneous prudent understanding of and appreciation …

Type 2 Diabetes Impairs The Ability Of Skeletal Muscle Pericytes To Augment Postischemic Neovascularization In Db/Db Mice, Katherine L. Hayes, Louis M. Messina, Lawrence M. Schwartz, Jinglian Yan, Amy S. Burnside, Sarah Witkowski May 2018

Type 2 Diabetes Impairs The Ability Of Skeletal Muscle Pericytes To Augment Postischemic Neovascularization In Db/Db Mice, Katherine L. Hayes, Louis M. Messina, Lawrence M. Schwartz, Jinglian Yan, Amy S. Burnside, Sarah Witkowski

Exercise and Sport Studies: Faculty Publications

Peripheral artery disease is an atherosclerotic occlusive disease that causes limb ischemia and has few effective noninterventional treatments. Stem cell therapy is promising, but concomitant diabetes may limit its effectiveness. We evaluated the therapeutic potential of skeletal muscle pericytes to augment postischemic neovascularization in wild-type and type 2 diabetic (T2DM) mice. Wild-type C57BL/6J and leptin receptor spontaneous mutation db/db T2DM mice underwent unilateral femoral artery excision to induce limb ischemia. Twenty-four hours after ischemia induction, CD45-CD34-CD146+ skeletal muscle pericytes or vehicle controls were transplanted into ischemic hindlimb muscles. At postoperative day 28, pericyte transplantation augmented blood flow recovery in wild-type …

Patterns Of Social Skill Development Over-Time Among Clusters Of LifeSports Participants, Dawn Anderson-Butcher, Eric Martin, Lauren Paluta, Dan Gould

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although growing in prevalence, little is known about how and for whom sport-based positive youth development (PYD) programs make a difference. This study addresses two gaps: A lack of multi-year studies and limited research differentiating outcomes between groups of participants. Specifically, this study uses repeated measures ANOVAs and hierarchical and non-hierarchical modeling procedures to investigate outcomes among two clusters of underserved youth who participated in two consecutive LiFEsports summer camps. Two hundred and thirty one youth participated, with the majority African American (87%) and male (62%). The average age of participants was 10.71 years. Participants completed surveys to assess …

Game Spirituality: How Games Tell Us More Than We Might Think, Chad Carlson Jan 2018

Game Spirituality: How Games Tell Us More Than We Might Think, Chad Carlson

Faculty Publications

While we often see games as less serious or at least less transcendental than religion there is reason to believe that games can evoke similarly meaningful narratives that allow us to learn a great deal about ourselves and our world. And games do so often using the same symbolic and metaphorical mechanisms that generate meaning in religious experience. In this paper, I explore some of the ways in which game myths—the myths created from and through games—generate meaning in our lives. People experience myths in games very similarly to how they might in religion. I first explain what myth means …
