Polar Bear Behavior: Morphologic And Physiologic Adaptations, John P. Whiteman Jan 2021

Polar Bear Behavior: Morphologic And Physiologic Adaptations, John P. Whiteman

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Polar bears possess morphologic and physiologic characteristics that reflect their terrestrial lineage as members of the bear family (Ursidae) as well as adaptations to the Arctic marine environment. Among marine mammals, they are the least adapted for aquatic life. They exhibit substantial seasonality in body mass, body condition, and many physiological functions, reflecting the annual cycle of both their Arctic sea ice habitat and the availability of their main prey, ringed seals. This hypercarnivorous diet has likely influenced the polar bear’s craniodental morphology and nutritional physiology. Similar to other marine mammal predators, polar bears exhibit a relatively high resting metabolic …

Vitamin D Deficiency And Supplementation In Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease, Angela Morton Dec 2019

Vitamin D Deficiency And Supplementation In Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease, Angela Morton

All Student-Created Educational Resources

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health concern with rising prevalence. Vitamin D deficiency (/mL) and insufficiency (20–29 ng/mL) are common among patients with CKD undergoing dialysis. The objective was to review current research on vitamin D supplementation for dialysis patients and the effect on their serum vitamin D levels.

What Are The Effects Of Nutrition Counseling Intervention On The Renal Labs (Bun, Creatinine, Gfr) Among Mexican American Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease Stages 3-4 At 1 Month, 3 Months And 6 Months?, Laura Rosales

All Student-Created Educational Resources

This is a quantitative quasi-experiment that will use purposive sampling to recruit the Mexican American adult patients diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Stages 1 and 2 and have not been diagnosed with Diabetes or received nutrition intervention for CKD. The purpose of this research is to identify at what stage nutrition counseling has a significant result on renal labs from patients diagnosed with CKD. The data from this research would provide information needed for medical providers to use in their treatment course for their patients with CKD.

The Mysteries Of Your Blood, Alexandra J. Mauer May 2016

The Mysteries Of Your Blood, Alexandra J. Mauer

BU Well

Did you know that your blood type can be useful for determining disease susceptibility and even creating a diet that works best for your personal metabolism? The Mysteries of your Blood is an article that delves into the science behind the ABO blood types and explains why your body can handle certain foods, stress, and illness differently than someone with a different blood type. It proposes a new, perplexing way to determine how to avoid certain health problems while at the same time offering suggestions of what to eat or, rather, what to avoid eating.

Determining If C-Fos Protects Β-Cells From Apoptosis, Kyle Kener, Jeffery Tessem Feb 2016

Determining If C-Fos Protects Β-Cells From Apoptosis, Kyle Kener, Jeffery Tessem

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Diabetes, a disease characterized by the inability of the body to maintain a normal blood glucose level, continues to affect the lives of many. In both Type I and Type II diabetes, eventual β-cell destruction results in decreased β-cell mass. Regeneration of functional β-cells and protection of such, could help reverse the effects of this disease and could possibly lead to a cure. Many studies have been done to increase functioning β-cell mass, but protecting regenerated β-cells from further apoptotic insults could greatly increase the effectiveness of β-cell transplants and other future treatments of the disease.
