Closing Symposium Remarks: Reflections On A Legacy That Endures, Jelani Jefferson Exum May 2026

Closing Symposium Remarks: Reflections On A Legacy That Endures, Jelani Jefferson Exum

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

I am back again, but this time, to give my closing remarks and to reflect on this extraordinary day. I think that is a fitting word for it. I want to take a moment to reflect on our experience together and to celebrate the enduring power and purpose of scholarship at St. John’s Law. This has been a wonderful opportunity to hear from our faculty, to engage with one another, and to witness the profound ways in which scholarship shapes the law, the academy, and society.

It is a privilege to be here, not only marking the centennial of …

The Evolution Of Legal Scholarship, Edward D. Cavanagh May 2026

The Evolution Of Legal Scholarship, Edward D. Cavanagh

Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development

(Excerpt)

Historically, law schools have evaluated their faculty on performance in three areas: (1) classroom teaching; (2) service to their schools and the profession; and (3) scholarship. The criteria for classroom teaching and service have remained relatively constant over the years. However, the definition of scholarship has broadened significantly in recent decades. At the same time, courts—once reluctant to embrace academic research—are increasingly relying on academic scholarship to shape their legal opinions. This Essay analyses the evolution of academic scholarship and how that scholarship has impacted judicial decision making.

Foreword: The ‘Why’ & How’ Of Artificial Intelligence In Legal Scholarship, Spencer Nayar, Michael I. Cooper May 2025

Foreword: The ‘Why’ & How’ Of Artificial Intelligence In Legal Scholarship, Spencer Nayar, Michael I. Cooper

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

In the course of publishing the 2024–25 Volume of the Texas A&M Journal of Property Law, we, the Editorial Board, were presented with the opportunity to publish a collection of articles drafted explicitly with the assistance of Artificial Intelligence (“AI”). After some consideration, we made the decision to do so. The following is our endeavor to share with our peers and colleagues—who may soon find themselves in similar situations—what we have learned in this process and, separately, contribute some forward-looking standards that can be implemented in the arena of legal scholarship for the transparent signaling and taxonomizing of AI-assisted works.

Panel Discussion: Balancing Scholarship, Teaching And Service To Succeed On The Tenure Track – A Workshop For Pretenure Colleagues And Faculty Aspirants, Brenda Smith

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

In imagining the National People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference, the planning committee brainstormed about the theme of the conference and the scope of panels and opportunities that would capture the breadth and vibrancy of scholarship by faculty of color. An antecedent, however, to that scholarship is the entry, success, and thriving of faculty of color in the academy.

Using Artificial Intelligence In The Law Review Submissions Process, Brenda M. Simon Nov 2022

Using Artificial Intelligence In The Law Review Submissions Process, Brenda M. Simon

Faculty Scholarship

The use of artificial intelligence to help editors examine law review submissions may provide a way to improve an overburdened system. This Article is the first to explore the promise and pitfalls of using artificial intelligence in the law review submissions process. Technology-assisted review of submissions offers many possible benefits. It can simplify preemption checks, prevent plagiarism, detect failure to comply with formatting requirements, and identify missing citations. These efficiencies may allow editors to address serious flaws in the current selection process, including the use of heuristics that may result in discriminatory outcomes and dependence on lower-ranked journals to conduct …

Using The “Scholarship As Conversation” Frame To Explain The Importance Of Inclusive Citation, Olivia Smith Schlinck

Library Staff Online Writings

It’s been nearly two years since the largest civil rights movement – the protests stemming from the murder of George Floyd by a police officer – swept the United States. That means it has also been nearly two years since law schools across the country released statements and created taskforces and enacted initiatives to inject principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into the school halls.

Acknowledgements As A Window Into Legal Academia, Jonathan Tietz, W. Nicholson Price Ii Mar 2021

Acknowledgements As A Window Into Legal Academia, Jonathan Tietz, W. Nicholson Price Ii

Articles

Legal scholarship in the United States is an oddity—an institution built on student editorship, a lack of peer review, and a dramatically high proportion of solo authorship. It is often argued that this makes legal scholarship fundamentally different from scholarship in other fields, which is largely peer-reviewed by academics. We use acknowledgments in biographical footnotes from law review articles to probe the nature of legal knowledge co-production and de facto peer review in the legal literature. Using a survey and a textual analysis of about thirty thousand law review articles from 2008 to 2017, we examined the nature of knowledge …

Re-Envisioning Law Student Scholarship, Emily Zimmerman Oct 2020

Re-Envisioning Law Student Scholarship, Emily Zimmerman

Catholic University Law Review

This Article recommends that we think more intentionally about how law students’ engagement in scholarship can promote their professional development. In so doing, we should recognize that legal scholarship plays a different role for law students than it does for law professors. Rather than trying to replicate law professors’ relationship with scholarship, the pedagogy of law student scholarship should focus more intentionally on the value of scholarship for law students—most of whom will not become law professors.

This Article suggests that much of the value of scholarship for law students lies in process, rather than product. Rather than thinking …

The Semisecret Life Of Late Mao-Era International Law Scholarship, James D. Fry, Huang Yining Sep 2019

The Semisecret Life Of Late Mao-Era International Law Scholarship, James D. Fry, Huang Yining

Pace Law Review

This Article is delimited by a focus on international law scholarship during the late Mao era, not on the PRC’s actual approach to or pronouncements on international law, mainly in order to respond directly to the assertion of U.S.-based international law scholars on late Mao-era scholarship. Of course, considerable ambiguity surrounds what constitutes scholarly work; no legal or even consensus definition generally exists. To be clear, definitions might exist in specific contexts such as the Foreign Agents Registration Act (“FARA”) of the United States, which prohibits foreign lobbying except for “bonafide religious, scholastic, academic or scientific pursuits or the fine …

Understanding the differences between the tools and techniques available to assist on this topic can be a complex endeavor. This program focused on providing the best strategies to increase the impact of faculty scholarship. Speakers discussed the various social media platforms available to upload scholarship, as well as how to increase findability in search results and take …

Food Waste Legislation Scholarship: A Mapping Study, Angela Hackstadt

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The purpose of this study is to examine research activity on food waste legislation published in law journals to identify top sources and experts cited by recent scholarship. Searches for "food loss" and "food waste" were conducted in three legal research databases for law journal articles published between January 2013 and January 2018. The core list of selected articles consists of 13 law journal articles. The citations from each of the core articles were collected to form a database, which was analyzed to determine what kinds of resources legal scholars rely on when conducting research in food waste legislation. Government …

Navigating Scholarship Discovery, Research Impact, And Open Access, Carol A. Watson, Jean-Gabriel Bankier, Gregg Gordon

Presentations

The leadership teams of bepress and SSRN will present the findings of an integration pilot conducted in partnership with Columbia Law School’s Arthur W. Diamond Law Library, the University of Georgia School of Law’s Alexander Campbell King Law Library, and Southern Methodist University’s Cox School of Business. Expanding the reach of open access scholarship is central to the mission of both bepress and SSRN. However for many institutions, the separation of the two platforms had created barriers to faculty engagement and the building of successful open access initiatives. With both companies now part of the Elsevier portfolio, it seemed the …
