Abstract: More law students than ever before begin law school having been diagnosed with a learning disability. As legal educators, do we have an obligation to expand our teaching methodologies beyond the typical law student? What teaching methodologies work most effectively for law students with learning disabilities? The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of law students with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) about their law school experience. Law students who are starting summer associate positions often need a “reality check.”

Whether these aspiring lawyers are moving from the casual summer employment of their college days, or switching professional fields, they will have to understand and adapt to the culture of a law firm.

New summer associates need to understand the mores of their own firm and the locale’s legal culture, and master practical matters such as the firm’s billing system. Legal research that is “more or less accurate” is not accurate enough, and may be too costly, for a law firm’s clients.

While it may not be possible for law schools to train students completely within three years for the practice of law, we can come much closer to this goal and make the transition to professional life an easier and more productive one. Branch Rickey is best known as the president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers who brought Jackie Robinson into big league baseball in 1947, thus integrating a major American institution seven years before Brown v. Board of Education. Even apart from this heroic step, Rickey would probably be known as the most significant baseball executive ever, primarily for his work with the Dodgers and, earlier, the St. Louis Cardinals; the modern farm system and extensive spring training facilities are chief among his many innovations. Legal Reading And Success In Law School: An Empirical Study, Leah M. Christensen

Seattle University Law Review

Part II of this Article describes the cognitive challenges of legal reading. Part III discusses the prior reading studies that have examined how individuals read legal text. Part IV describes the present study, including its participants, the think aloud procedure, and the methodology used to collect, analyze, and interpret the data. Part V sets out the results of the study and explains the various conclusions that might be drawn from them. Finally, Part VI presents examples of the reading strategies that the most successful law students use and offers observations on how to incorporate these strategies into the legal classroom.

This Article will examine whether the expansion of required LRW courses into the realm of transactional drafting is justifiable. Part II will assess the need for required transactional drafting instruction by showing, empirically, that many students lack a disposition towards litigation or have an affirmative inclination towards non-litigation work. This Part includes both a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the issue: It includes a survey of nearly one-thousand first-year law students nationwide and a set of questions and responses from a number of law students who self-identified as future transactional lawyers but who were members of traditional litigation-centric LRW courses. …

Because child welfare cases in the world of professional practice require interdisciplinary collaboration, it would seem to follow that graduate students, who will become child welfare professionals, should be trained together, both in the classroom and in clinical settings. However, the implementation of interdisciplinary training is far from straightforward. In this Article, we focus on law and social work students. First, we describe the roles of lawyers and social worker in child welfare work. Next we argue that interdisciplinary classroom teaching is easier than clinical teaching, proposing a series of topics to be covered in an interdisciplinary course. Finally, we …
