Pharmaceuticals in the environment and public water supplies are believed to have serious impacts on human and environmental health. Current research suggests that exposure to certain drugs and their residues may result in a variety of adverse human health effects. Other studies more conclusively show that even minute concentrations of pharmaceuticals in the environment can have detrimental effects on aquatic and terrestrial species. The right to education is often referred to as a “multiplier right” because its enjoyment enhances other human rights. It is enumerated in several international instruments, but it is codified in greatest detail in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Despite its importance, the right to education has received limited attention from scholars, practitioners, and international and regional human rights bodies as compared to other economic, social and cultural rights (ECSRs). Chemicals from a wide variety of pharmaceutical and personal care products ("PPCPs"), their byproducts and endocrine disrupting compounds ("EDCs") have received growing attention from the water treatment and wastewater treatment community because of the ability of PPCPs to persist, or only partially degrade, in water and during wastewater treatment.

Millions of farm workers nation-wide who load, mix and/or apply pesticides are exposed to incredible amounts of pesticides on a daily basis. Various inefficiencies and inconsistencies in the regulatory system - including insufficient illness reporting data systems, lack of regulatory compliance and enforcement, and inadequate data and information on the chronic effects of exposure and overexposure to various pesticides - increase the likelihood that these workers will continue to be exposed to dangerous amounts of pesticides. In Pennsylvania, Medicaid is a critical source of health insurance for people of color, far more so than for white persons. Currently, 38.7% of black or African American Pennsylvanians and 32.4% of Hispanics rely on Medicaid to pay their medical bills, compared to only 12% of white non-Hispanics. With the advent of national health care reform, Medicaid promises to take on an expanded role in opening doors to the health care system for people of color, by extending coverage to many who previously lacked insurance. Further, an aging population places greater future stress on the already backlogged disability adjudicatory system. The Social Security Administration (SSA) has placed great emphasis on accurately and efficiently interpreting the definition of disability through initiatives to strengthen medical qualifications for long-term impairment. Medical evidence, however, is limited because medical professionals may diagnose and evaluate functionality at the time of examination, but long-term predictions are often unclear. This Note argues that California should amend its Good Samaritan law by either creating a duty to assist or clarifying the statute. It first outlines the history of Good Samaritan law in California and describe developments in the law through today. It then argues that Good Samaritan law in California is ineffective because citizens still fear legal liability and thus refuse to assist during emergencies. Finally, it proposes specific changes to the California Good Samaritan law.

In sports medicine, adult stem cells are the subject of great interest. Several uses of stem cells are under investigation including cartilage repair, meniscal regeneration, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, and tendinopathy. Extensive clinical and basic science research is warranted as stem cell therapies become increasingly common in clinical practice. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is responsible for regulating the use of stem cells through its “Human Cells, Tissues, and Cellular and Tissue-Based Products” regulations. Turkey’s Biosafety Law (2010) imposes some of the world’s most stringent restrictions on the import, release and marketing of genetically modified foodstuffs. The Biosafety Board has not approved a single food event; the Council of State has suspended approval of MON 810; Turks have endured meat and milk price spikes; herders are going bankrupt for lack of affordable feed; and importers have been arrested and prosecuted for trace contamination with unapproved GMOs. Over the past twenty-five years national concern over the drug-crime relationship has been increasing. This increase has led to growth of criminal justice penalties as opposed to therapeutic approaches such as medication-assisted treatment, resulting in an expansion of the drug-involved criminal justice population. Individuals who are opioid-dependent are vulnerable at the time of arrest, and at the time of their initial detention due to their chemical dependence and impairment of their neurocognitive functioning. Fertility in women declines significantly at age thirty-two and takes a sharp downward turn at age thirty-seven. Miscarriages also increase with age. In vitro fertilization cannot reverse the effects of aging, and embryo screening, egg freezing, and egg donation are imperfect solutions.

Unfortunately, many women fail to grasp these facts until it is too late. Various factors are to blame, including physicians who shy away from the topic of age-related fertility decline, persistent messaging about the need for pregnancy prevention (implying that conception is easy), and media accounts of celebrities who are pregnant in their forties.

For the past thirty years, the US Supreme Court's standard of Strickland v. Washington has governed the question of adequacy of counsel in criminal trials. There, in a Sixth Amendment analysis, the Supreme Court acknowledged that simply having a lawyer assigned to a defendant was not constitutionally adequate, but that that lawyer must provide "effective assistance of counsel," effectiveness being defined, pallidly, as requiring simply that counsel's efforts be “reasonable” under the circumstances. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has been critical of the administration of his predecessor, Michael Bloomberg, has nevertheless committed to carry forward one Bloomberg initiative: the citywide size restriction on sales of "sugary drinks," or most commonly, sodas. The "Portion Cap Rule" would have prohibited the sale of sugary drinks in containers exceeding 16 ounces, but is currently enjoined from taking effect and awaits a ruling from the New York State Court of Appeal.
