Between The Imagination Of Legends And The Challenge Of Reality: Writing To Save The Planet, Nadia Iskandarani Oct 2024

Between The Imagination Of Legends And The Challenge Of Reality: Writing To Save The Planet, Nadia Iskandarani

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior

Climate change is a global phenomenon due to global warming, characterized by a general increase in average temperatures. This change is linked to industrial activity, in particular to the greenhouse effect, which is why it is said to be of human origin. Alongside scientists, writers now include themes linked to global warming. New genres have appeared such as climate fiction. Thomas B. Reverdy, in his novel Climax describes the end of the world in the context of global warming. The action takes place in the north, towards the Arctic. The story involves various protagonists who remember Norse legends about the …

Climate Change And Neologisms: Towards A Lexico-Semantic Study, Abdelfetah Nacer Idrissi Oct 2024

Climate Change And Neologisms: Towards A Lexico-Semantic Study, Abdelfetah Nacer Idrissi

BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior

Climate change, a global phenomenon resulting from human activity and natural factors, is one of the most pressing concerns of our time. The impacts of global warming, rising sea levels, extreme weather events and biodiversity loss are increasingly evident. Equally remarkable is the impact this colossal challenge is having on our language, a living mirror of our collective understanding of the world. Indeed, the appearance of terms such as "ecoanxiety", "climavore" and "energy transition" are all signs of a profound transformation of the lexicon, demonstrating our growing commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness. This study, which aims to be a …

The Carbon Price Equivalent: A Metric For Comparing Climate Change Mitigation Efforts Across Jurisdictions, Gabriel Weil Jan 2021

The Carbon Price Equivalent: A Metric For Comparing Climate Change Mitigation Efforts Across Jurisdictions, Gabriel Weil

Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)

Climate change presents a global commons problem: Emissions reductions on the scale needed to meet global targets do not pass a domestic cost-benefit test in most countries. To give national governments ample incentive to pursue deep decarbonization, mutual interstate coercion will be necessary. Many proposed tools of coercive climate diplomacy would require a onedimensional metric for comparing the stringency of climate change mitigation policy packages across jurisdictions. This article proposes and defends such a metric: the carbon price equivalent. There is substantial variation in the set of climate change mitigation policy instruments implemented by different countries. Nonetheless, the consequences of …

2016 - California Land Use And Management - A Resource Management Strategy Of The California Water Plan Mar 2019

2016 - California Land Use And Management - A Resource Management Strategy Of The California Water Plan

Miscellaneous Documents and Reports

Land use planning and management cuts across many resource management strategies. More efficient and effective land use is linked to several resource management strategies including watershed, water use efficiency, groundwater quality, flood management, parks and recreation, climate change adaptive management and agricultural lands stewardship. Directly development away from agricultural lands permits multi-objective management of these lands for agricultural preservation, floodplain management, water quality, habitat conservation, and sustainable development. In addition, planning for more compact and sustainable communities, both urban and rural, will assist in reducing reliance on the state-s water supply, and result in more efficient use of California’s water …

2008 - Managing An Uncertain Future - Climate Change Adaptation Strategies For California's Water

Miscellaneous Documents and Reports

This report recommends a number of adaptation strategies for California and local water managers to improve their capacity to handle change. Many of the strategies will also help adapt California's water resources to accommodate non-climate demands including a growing population, ecosystem restoration and greater flood protection. Several of the recommendations in this report are ready for immediate adoption, while others need additional public deliberation and development. Some can be implemented using existing resources and authority, while the majority will require new resources, sustained financial investment and significant collaborative effort.

Freshwater Reservoirs: Global Warming’S Best Kept Secret, Beau Baily Jan 2018

Freshwater Reservoirs: Global Warming’S Best Kept Secret, Beau Baily

Seattle Journal of Environmental Law

Fresh water reservoir construction involves the decomposition of plants that were previously able to absorb greenhouse gas and prevent its release into the atmosphere. With these plants no longer able to absorb greenhouse gas, it is released into the atmosphere, making freshwater reservoirs a source of global warming. Due to an increasing demand for clean energy, countries are planning and constructing dams at unprecedented rates. With dams come reservoirs. While hydroelectric energy is clean energy, the methods used to harness that clean energy create environmental problems that contribute to global warming. Ironically, this hydroelectric boom could do more harm than …

Rising Temperatures: Rising Tides, Prof. Elizabeth Burleson Jan 1996

Rising Temperatures: Rising Tides, Prof. Elizabeth Burleson

Prof. Elizabeth Burleson

Transboundary environmental problems do not distinguish between political boundaries. Global warming is expected to cause thermal expansion of water and melt glaciers. Both are predicted to lead to a rise in sea level. We must enlarge our paradigms to encompass a global reality and reliance upon global participation.
