The Light of Islam

In medieval sources, the city of Tashkent was called Shash. Many well-known scholars in the Islamic sciences, such as hadith, jurisprudence, and mysticism, emerged from Shash. Many great scientists from this region are known to the world by the nisbas of Shoshiy and Toshkandiy. Ancient Tashkent was one of the sacred places where great and pious scientists, muhaddis, and righteous people have been buried. Here, the noble bodies of Zangi ata, Sheikh Umar Vali Baghistani, Sheikh Khovand Tahur, Sheikh Zayniddin Kuyi Arifon, and others found eternal rest. Constitutional equal protection values serve as social integration policies for new Americans and generations that follow. They promise equal opportunity, fair treatment, protection from unlawful discrimination, and freedom to preserve cultural identities in their new communities. However, in times of national security crises and political polarization, the disjuncture in the way equal protection doctrines have been historically implemented often reflect deep-rooted inequities that impact underrepresented communities. American Muslims are one such community in which members have experienced anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant sentiment particularly after 9/11 and political polarization on immigration and civil rights policies. Abdullahi An-Na'im has set his life's quest on attempting to find a way that Muslim society can be attuned to the moral commands of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a Western creation. At present, the Shari'a and the Declaration are in obvious tension, if not conflict, in areas such as freedom of religion and the rights of women. An-Na'im finds that the Shari 'a is a creation of man derived in history from an interpretation of Islamic sources.
