Youth Activism, Art And Transitional Artist: Emerging Spaces Of Memory After The Jasmin Revolution, Arnaud Kurze
Youth Activism, Art And Transitional Artist: Emerging Spaces Of Memory After The Jasmin Revolution, Arnaud Kurze
Arnaud Kurze
This project explores the creation of alternative transitional justice spaces in post-conflict contexts, particularly concentrating on the role of art and the impact of social movements to address human rights abuses. Drawing from post-authoritarian Tunisia, it scrutinizes the work of contemporary youth activists and artists to deal with the past and foster sociopolitical change. Although these vanguard protesters provoked the overthrow of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, the power vacuum was quickly filled by old elites. The exclusion of young revolutionaries from political decision-making led to unprecedented forms of mobilization to account for repression and injustice under …

Research And Rhetorical Purpose: Using Genre Analysis To Understand Source Use In Technical And Professional Writing, Lee-Ann K. Breuch, Brian N. Larson
Brian Larson
This chapter describes a pilot study of student research-based writing in a technical and professional writing course designed for college-level juniors and seniors across the curriculum; fifteen analytical research papers are coded based on the rhetorical move John Swales (1990) calls "reference to previous research" to increase our understanding of how students use sources to introduce, support, or compare/ contrast ideas and previous research. Student papers in this study overwhelmingly used sources to support main ideas, occasionally used sources to introduce ideas, often in the form of topic sentences, but rarely used sources to compare/ contrast ideas. The frequency of …

Rethinking The Secular: Religion, Ethics And Science In Food Regulation, Richard Mohr
Rethinking The Secular: Religion, Ethics And Science In Food Regulation, Richard Mohr
Richard Mohr
This paper explores some issues at the intersection of regulation and religion, as they apply to food. It reports on a work in progress examining the regulations and values that affect choices at food and drink outlets in an inner suburban street in Sydney.
It is part of a larger projected study of food as a central social, material and religious concern. In it we are exploring questions around community relations in a culturally and religiously diverse society. Here I focus on the ways religious, ethical and scientific considerations interact with regulatory regimes, whether those of government, industry, or religious …
Signature And Illusion: Lessons From The Baroque For 'Truth' In Law, Arts And Humanities, Richard Mohr
Signature And Illusion: Lessons From The Baroque For 'Truth' In Law, Arts And Humanities, Richard Mohr
Richard Mohr
Basic to contemporary problems in the disciplines of representation and interpretation is a split between a naïve acceptance of bare facts, presumed to exist in their own ‘objective’ world of objects, and the actions of subjects who interpret an intersubjective world. The solution is sought in some ‘new’ epistemologies: Martín Alcoff, Grosz, Kristeva, Butler, as well as in Benjamin and Gadamer, who look back to older ways of knowing. The methodology is an archaeology of these ways of knowing, focussed on a crucial transition in the understanding of representation between the renaissance and the baroque. It uses quintessential methods of …

What The Boomerang Misses: Pursuing International Film Co-Production Treaties And Strategies, Brian Yecies
What The Boomerang Misses: Pursuing International Film Co-Production Treaties And Strategies, Brian Yecies
Dr Brian Yecies
This paper illustrates some of the dynamic ways that members of the Korean, Australian, New Zealand and Chinese creative and cultural industries have engaged with international instruments such as co-production treaties. Strategies, benefits returned and lost costs, that is, sacrifices that are made in the process of producing a film or digital media program in more than one country, and/or with an international team are investigated to reveal how creators are engaging with the demands of different governments' policies. It is hoped that this paper and the larger research project to which it is attached will assist scholars, creative and …
The Role Of Hegemonic Masculinity And Hollywood In The New Korea, Richard Howson, Brian Yecies
The Role Of Hegemonic Masculinity And Hollywood In The New Korea, Richard Howson, Brian Yecies
Dr Brian Yecies
We argue that during the 1940s Hollywood films had an important role to play in the creation of a postwar South Korean society based on the new global U.S. hegemony. The connections between political and economic change in South Korea and sociocultural factors have hitherto scarcely been explored and, in this context, we argue that one of the key socio-cultural mechanisms that supported and even drove social change in the immediate post-war period was the Korean film industry and its representation of masculinity. The groundbreaking work of Antonio Gramsci on hegemony is drawn on in particular, his understanding of the …

The Korean “Cinema Of Assimilation” And The Construction Of Cultural Hegemony In The Final Years Of Japanese Rule, Brian Yecies, Richard Howson
Dr Brian Yecies
During the late 1930s, as Japan escalated war preparations with China, and after Governor-General Minami formalized the assimilationist ideology of “Japan and Korea as One Body”, cinema in Korea experienced a fundamental transformation. Korean filmmakers had little choice but to make co-productions that aimed to draw Koreans toward Japanese ways of thinking and living, while promoting a sense of loyalty to the Japanese Empire. Within this colonial context, and especially after the 1940 Korean Film Law facilitated the absorption of the Korean film industry into the Japanese film industry, a particular type of masculine hegemony was encouraged by a comprehensive …
The Chinese-Korean Co-Production Pact: Collaborative Encounters And The Accelerating Expansion Of Chinese Cinema, Brian Yecies
The Chinese-Korean Co-Production Pact: Collaborative Encounters And The Accelerating Expansion Of Chinese Cinema, Brian Yecies
Dr Brian Yecies
Official film co-production treaties are designed by policymakers to stimulate a range of collaboration and media flows as determinants of country rankings. China, where , technology transfer, and joint funding initiatives in the industry. Since July 2004, the Chinese government has used this top-down approach to cultural diplomacy as a symbolic tool for advancing Chinese cinema and opening the domestic market to a host of willing international partners. Korean filmmakers in particular have exploited the (often informal) opportunities presented, engaging in vigorous cooperation between film industry firms and practitioners is making significant inroads, is one such case, having fallen outside …

The Douban Online Social Media Barometer And The Chinese Reception Of Korean Popular Culture Flows, Brian Yecies, Jie Yang, Ae-Gyung Shim, Kai Ruo Soh, Matthew J. Berryman
Dr Brian Yecies
Since its launch in 2005, the Chinese online social networking site Douban has become a key platform for creating and sharing user-generated content on a rising tide of global popular culture. Such content and its corresponding user data has become so prolific that Western media outlets are now using Douban a key barometer for gauging representative opinions and attitudes towards foreign content in China. However, a full range of tools for harvesting and analyzing Chinese-language datasets has yet to be explored in English. This article attempts to fill this gap by investigating the applicability of an analytical framework that can …
The K-Pop Factory Phenomenon, Brian Yecies, Ae-Gyung Shim
The K-Pop Factory Phenomenon, Brian Yecies, Ae-Gyung Shim
Dr Brian Yecies
Across the global music industry and the popular media, “K-pop” is both a buzzword and soft-power concept that encapsulates the astounding success currently enjoyed by Korean cultural contents, in terms of both production and export values. Despite creative input from a variety of international contributors, the meteoric rise of K-pop was not anticipated by most global music industry players. In addition, by circumventing the barriers to entry (and costs) associated with traditional media production and distribution channels dominated by a few major global players, successfully exploiting the promotional space offered by YouTube, and being an early adopter of this new commercial …

Film Pioneer Lee Man-Hee And The Creation Of A Contemporary Korean Cinema Legend, Ae-Gyung Shim, Brian Yecies
Film Pioneer Lee Man-Hee And The Creation Of A Contemporary Korean Cinema Legend, Ae-Gyung Shim, Brian Yecies
Dr Brian Yecies
At the peak of Korean cinema's contemporary golden age in the mid-2000s, 1960s auteur director Lee Man-hee and his films were rediscovered and have since become appreciated in ways that Lee himself never experienced. In 2010, his classic Late Autumn was remade as a transnational coproduction for a pan-Asian audience. Four decades after his death, Lee remains one of the most influential directors in Korea's history. To understand his legacy and its sociohistorical conditions, the authors analyze how Lee's provocative genre experimentation reinvigorated the Korean film industry in the 1960s under Park Chung-hee's authoritarian regime, a spirit that remains alive …
Chinese International Film Encounters: Closing The Gaps With Hollywood With Soft Power Appeal At Home And Abroad (中国电影与韩国的国际碰撞-中国电影通过软实力追赶好莱坞), Brian Yecies
Dr Brian Yecies
In this article, I aim to expand our understanding of the transnational production and increasing international appeal of contemporary Chinese cinema in 2012 and 2013; my viewpoint is from the outside looking in. To achieve this aim, I analyze two key developments that are contributing to the rapidly shifting shape and style of the Chinese film industry: 1) increasing post-production collaborations with film industry practitioners and firms from South Korea – an important trading partner for China; and 2) the popular reception of Chinese films on the international film festival circuit, in particular the responses of a diverse group of …

Behind The Scenes Of Hallyu Down Under, Brian Yecies
Dr Brian Yecies
Like fusion cuisine, international film co-productions have become commonplace in the 21st century, but getting the balance of flavours right is still a challenge in the case of a couple of recent collaborations - especially where the creation of original and dynamic soundscapes has been a critical factor - a pinch of aussie technical skill and ingenuity has proven to be a key ingredient.
Aspire And Be Inspired As A Korea Foundation Fellow: Pay It Forward In The Long-Term, Brian Yecies
Aspire And Be Inspired As A Korea Foundation Fellow: Pay It Forward In The Long-Term, Brian Yecies
Dr Brian Yecies
This essay's title refers to the 2000 feature film Pay it Forward directed by Mimi Leder and starring the talented Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt, and Haley Joel Osment. The film is not all that great in terms of making a contribution to the art of cinema, which is what I research and teach. However, its message carries a deep meaning. The phrase "pay it forward" captures the spirit of the potential impact Korea Foundation fellows have/can have in and on society. Everything we do and everyone we come in contact with in our lives is touched in some way. Everything …

Utopia Or Dystopia: A Contested Space On Sydney's Urban Frontier, Ian Willis
Utopia Or Dystopia: A Contested Space On Sydney's Urban Frontier, Ian Willis
Ian Willis
Australia is a settler society where the rural-urban fringe of the major cities and regional centres is a contestable stage. There are a range of actors who compete in place making processes re-shaping the cultural landscape when there is collision over the ownership of space and the dominant narrative. This paper examines the proposition that Sydney's urban growth has created a zone of conflict on the city's metropolitan frontier between cultural heritage and the interests of development. In recent years Sydney's rural-urban fringe has encroached on the village boundaries of Menangle where there has been a collision between the expectation …
