Bringing Pacific Bluefin Tuna Back From The Brink: Ensuring The Submission Of Operational Data To The Western And Central Pacific Fisheries Commission, Chris Wold, Mitsuhiko Takahashi, Siwon Park, Viv Fernandes, Sarah Butler

The Commission of the Convention on the Conservation and Management of Highly Migratory Fish Stocks in the Western Pacific Ocean (WCPFC) manages fish stocks of significant financial and ecological value across an area of the Pacific Ocean comprising 20% of Earth. WCPFC members, however, have disagreed sharply over management measures for tuna, sharks, and other species, in part because some WCPFC members have refused to provide the WCPFC with vessel-specific data, known as operational data, which is needed to manage the stocks sustainably. Despite a legal requirement to submit operational data to the WCPFC, these members, including Japan and Korea, …

Nuclear Power Plant Policy Comparison Between The U.S. And Republic Of Korea, Vara Ha
International Development, Community and Environment (IDCE)
Five years after the Fukushima accident, people and countries still argue about the opportunity costs of denuclearization. While nuclear power generation has safety and waste issues, it is carbon free. Climate change has created more pressure for greenhouse gas reduction, so a few countries have decided to maintain or even increase nuclear power generation. The United States ranks first for using nuclear power produced by electricity generation, while the Republic of Korea, the closest country in proximity to Japan, ranks fourth in countries that use nuclear power. In fact, Korea even rapidly increased nuclear business after the Fukushima accident. Despite …
International Law And Japan’S Territorial Disputes, Raul (Pete) Pedrozo
International Law And Japan’S Territorial Disputes, Raul (Pete) Pedrozo
International Law Studies
Five of the most contentious territorial disputes that plague the Asia-Pacific today have their roots in the San Francisco Peace Treaty. The treaty required Japan to renounce all claims with regard to a number of lands, but failed to declare a successor State to these lands. Over the years, these disputes have intensified as a result of rising nationalism and a growing demand for ocean resources. This article discusses the merits of Japan’s claims to the Kurile Islands, Liancourt Rocks and Pinnacle Islands and concludes that Japan’s claims are superior to those of the other claimants.

The Role Of Hegemonic Masculinity And Hollywood In The New Korea, Richard Howson, Brian Yecies

We argue that during the 1940s Hollywood films had an important role to play in the creation of a postwar South Korean society based on the new global U.S. hegemony. The connections between political and economic change in South Korea and sociocultural factors have hitherto scarcely been explored and, in this context, we argue that one of the key socio-cultural mechanisms that supported and even drove social change in the immediate post-war period was the Korean film industry and its representation of masculinity. The groundbreaking work of Antonio Gramsci on hegemony is drawn on in particular, his understanding of the …

To shed light on the important and growing trend in international filmmaking, this chapter investigates the increasing levels of co-operation in co-productions and post-production work between China and Korea since the mid-2000s, following a surge in personnel exchange and technological transfer. It explains how a range of international relationships and industry connections is contributing to a new ecology of expertise, which in turn is boosting the expansion of China’s domestic market and synergistically transforming the shape and style of Chinese cinema.
