Embryo Donation: The Government Adopts A Cause, Jaime E. Conde

The disposition of cryopreserved supernumerary embryos has become a divisive issue that puts to test the tenets of the "culture of life" promoted by the Vatican and President George W. Bush. The Bush administration has spent millions of dollars to promote "embryo adoptions" while imposing restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. On the other hand, contemporary Catholic moral theologians and philosophers disagree on the question of the morality of embryo "rescue" or "adoption" because the Church strongly opposes in vitro fertilization, the donation of gametes and embryo cryopreservation, as evidenced recently during the Italian fertility law referendum. …

"Aren't You Lucky You Have Two Mamas?" Redefining Parenthood In Light Of Evolving Reproductive Technologies And Social Change, John G. New

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Advances in reproductive technologies and a greater social acceptance of same- sex relationships have resulted in increasing numbers of lesbian couples conceiving and raising families. But when these relationships fail, state courts are faced with the difficult problem of determining which partner constitutes a "parent" for purposes of support and visitation. This article provides a comparative analysis of the different approaches of various state courts to this vexing problem and suggests a model that states might adopt via a modification of the Uniform Parentage Act.

Women As Perpetrators: Does Motherhood Have A Reformative Effect On Prostitution? , Lynne Marie Kohm

This article explores whether motherhood may have any restorative effect on prostitution. Section I provides an overview of the crime of prostitution. It analyzes the underlying themes of autonomy, power, authority, and control, and considers whether prostitution is an example of the ultimate loss of these qualities, or an exercise of complete freedom and liberty in autonomy. Section II discusses how motherhood affects the life of a prostitute. It analyzes current social science research and studies and explores maternal responsibilities in terms of potential work interruption, new personal roles, and anxieties associated with the work/family/crime triad.
