Hess V. Indiana Revisited: A Panel Discussion With Case Participants (Video), Ralph F. Gaebler, Richard Vaughan
Maurer Law Events
On November 19th, 2004, a panel discussion was held in the Moot Court Room of the Indiana University-Bloomington School of Law. The topic of the discussion was the landmark United States Supreme Court case, Hess v. Indiana. The case is particularly relevant to the law school because two members of the faculty (Tom Schornhorst and Pat Baude) served as lawyers to the defendant Greg Hess. Additionally, the protest and arrest took place half a block from the law school in front of the University's administration building (Bryan Hall) in 1970.
Joining Professors Schornhorst and Baude on the panel are three …

Institute Brief: Making Experiential Education Accessible For Students With Disabilities, Cynthia Zafft, Sara Sezun, Melanie Jordan
Institute Brief: Making Experiential Education Accessible For Students With Disabilities, Cynthia Zafft, Sara Sezun, Melanie Jordan
The Institute Brief Series, Institute for Community Inclusion
College students with disabilities enter with less work experience and have a harder time finding jobs than their nondisabled peers. Experiential education-- mentoring, internships, job shadowing, and so on-- can create a bridge to graduation and employment. However, that requires college professionals to consider access issues for all students. A new Institute Brief provides basic disability awareness information, suggests ways to create welcoming career offices, and offers ideas to increase access to experiential education.

Designing A Pre-Apprenticeship Model For Women Entering And Succeeding In The Construction Trades, Susan Moir Scd, Elizabeth Skidmore
Labor Studies Faculty Publication Series
It has been over a quarter century since the Carter administration set a goal of increasing the number of women working in the construction industry to 6.9% of the workforce. It is often overlooked that the stated intent of this policy initiative was for women to make up 25% of construction workers by the year 2000 (Eisenberg, 1999). While some isolated projects have met or exceeded the 6.9% target, the number of women working in the construction trades nationally increased in the first few years after 1979, but leveled off at under 3% in the early 1980’s and has stayed …

Keeping Schools Safe: Why Schools Should Have An Affirmative Duty To Protect Students From Harm By Other Students, Alison Bethel
Keeping Schools Safe: Why Schools Should Have An Affirmative Duty To Protect Students From Harm By Other Students, Alison Bethel
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] "Federal statutes have attempted to make schools safer by providing grants to assist schools in becoming violence-free. Similarly, some states have passed “bullying laws,” which mandate procedures for school officials to follow when dealing with bullying. These statutes, however, do not provide adequate remedies for students who are harmed by their peers during the school day. The majority of courts that have addressed student- on-student violence have declined to hold that compulsory education creates the type of special relationship needed to impose an affirmative duty on schools to protect students from harm by other students. While I agree that …

Obituary Thakor Shah By Amar Jesani & Vibhuti Patel, Professor Vibhuti Patel
Professor Vibhuti Patel
At a time when the nation needs people who could keep alive the secular conscience of Gujarat, the passing away of Thakor Shah on April 10, 2004 in Vadodara due to massive heart attack has come as a big jolt. He died while participating in the meeting of the network of social movements in Gujarat. Of the 76 years he lived, he spent over 60 years in public life, making personal sacrifices, fearlessly withstanding all attacks – physical and political – in his incessant struggle for organising working masses for their rights and justice. His life was a political journey …

In 2001, a roundtable on gender disparities for female professors in higher education was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The focus of the roundtable was "how best to ensure women professors experience the same opportunities, recognition and rewards as their male counterparts." Some three years later, a few faculty members from various disciplines weigh in with various perspectives on the current state of the gender gap.

The American Democratic Tradition & The Quest For Access & Equity In Higher Education: The Browns And Blues Of Social Change, Amilcar Shabazz
Afro-American Studies Faculty Publication Series
In this lecture I revisit the meaning of the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision and the legal and social struggles that led to the ruling and its consequences especially in the area of higher educational opportunity. I develop the idea of the American Democratic Tradition not as a fossilized ideal but as a contested terrain. The Brown decision and the blues of social change as a protracted, continuous process of struggle is the moment I am trying to render here in this lecture.
