As a teenager, I had a passion for studying foreign languages. I loved immersing myself in an unfamiliar idiom, struggling to make sense of another system for parsing words and sentences to describe experiences and observations. I reveled in subtle differences in the meaning of words that were sometimes, but not always, equivalents in translation. Most intriguing of all were the occasional insights I gained into the limitations of my own language when I recognized that a foreign locution simply has no English equivalent.

Chapter 7 - Reflections On The Scholarship Of Elizabeth B. Clark, Kristin Olbertson, Carol Weisbrod, Christine Stansell, Martha Minow
Manuscript of Women, Church, and State: Religion and the Culture of Individual Rights in Nineteenth-Century America
Elizabeth Clark's essays on early nineteenth-century reform movements make a compelling case that abolitionists and feminists alike understood individual rights from a profoundly religious perspective. Clark also demonstrates how these reformers advocated the protection of so-called "natural rights" for enslaved African-Americans and white women in the vivid and fervently emotional language of evangelical revivalism. Broader cultural and intellectual trends of resistance to governmental and clerical authority, trends rooted in liberal and evangelical Protestantism, Clark argues, helped fuel attacks on slavery and gender inequality. Rejecting other historians' portrayals of the antebellum reformers as primarily secular in orientation, Clark makes the arresting, …

This bibliography of scholarship about legal scholarship was originally prepared for the 1997 Conference of the Association of Legal Writing Directors. The Conference explored the rapidly developing area of scholarship by legal writing professors and the ways in which this important scholarship can be encouraged. Characteristically, when writing teachers turn their attention to a particular kind of writing project, they begin by examining both the genre and the creative activity the genre employs—that is, the process and the product.
