Legal Images Of Battered Women: Redefining The Issue Of Separation, Martha R. Mahoney

Part I of this article discusses violence in the ordinary lives of women, describing individual and societal denial that pretends domestic violence is rare when statistics show it is common, and describing the ways in which motherhood shapes women's experience of violence and choices in response to violence. Part II examines definitions of battering and evaluates their effectiveness at disguising or revealing the struggle for control at the heart of the battering process. Stallman V. Youngquist "No, You Can't Sue Mommy In Illinois:" The Illinois Supreme Court Rejects Maternal Prenatal Civil Liability, Joseph S. Badger
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This note examines the Illinois Supreme Court case which decided whether a mother could be held liable to her child for negligent infliction of prenatal injuries. This case pitted the interests of a fetus in being born with a sound mind and body against a mother's right to personal autonomy. After weighing the merits of these competing claims, and assessing the implications of an opposite conclusion, the supreme court held that the rights of the mother were superior to the interests of her fetus. Part I of this note will explore the concepts of self-determination and minority rights in international law and their development over time. This is particularly relevant to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, because these concepts saw their first full flowering in the period during and following the First World War, when those countries gained their independence from the European powers. Part II will discuss the evolution of the constitutional relationship between the Czechs and the Slovaks from the constitution of the first Czechoslovak Republic to the current constitutional reforms of the CSFR. In 1904 the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission set out its criteria for awarding medals for heroism: an unpaid actor must have voluntarily risked life and limb to rescue a victim to whom he or she was unrelated by any family tie. Such behavior toward family members was expected. In these days of perilous family life the performance of obligations associated with ongoing family relations is no longer taken for granted but has taken on new, heroic dimensions.
