The emphasis on freedom or enslavement of the body, and the issues that sprang from that focus, were feminists' contribution to nineteenth-century American liberalism, as well as their link to radical thought. Elizabeth Cady Stanton drew arguments from the realm of political liberty and religious tolerance to make the case for choice in private life. But the vision of individual autonomy in sexual and domestic matters served also as the basis for her definition of citizenship and as a paradigm for relations among citizens and between citizens and the state. Section II of this article describes the historical framework from which child custody mediation has developed. Section III discusses the process and procedures normally followed by a mediator in order to assure maximum, effective results. Section IV explains the role of the mediator including ethical considerations and problems faced by attorneys who wish to mediate the custody disputes of divorcing couples. Section V sets forth the results and conclusions of the Denver Custody Mediation Project (Denver Project), an influential study that has become the basis of encouraging mediation throughout the nation. Accommodation And Satisfaction: Women And Men Lawyers And The Balance Of Work And Family, David L. Chambers

This study of graduates of the University of Michigan Law School from the late 1970s reports on the differing ways that women and men have responded to the conflicting claims of work and family. It finds that women with children who have entered the profession have indeed continued to bear the principalr esponsibilitiesf or the care of children, but it alsof inds that these women, with all their burdens, are more satisfied with their careers and with the balance of their family and professional lives than other women and than men.
