Merchant seafaring, as the subject of modern research and study, is a profession that has not received an undue amount of attention or attraction. The modern seafarer thus remains a 20th century enigma. Of particular concern here will be the international standards of employment, particularly as they are implemented under circumstances of open-registry shipping where their enforcement is commonly called into question. Thus this study will present some of the debate surrounding the issue of conditions of employment aboard open-registry ships, indicating to what extent, if any, seafarers are adversely affected.
