The research conducted in this thesis aims to explain why fewer females than males choose law and pinpoint the explanation as to why they have disparate experiences in the field. The hypothesis is sex discrimination is to blame for the differences among female and male decision making. Sexual harassment and discrimination plays a very prominent role is male dominated fields and discourages females from joining those workforces. Throughout history, the United States has toggled between punitive and rehabilitative policies within the criminal justice system, creating social changes that have contributed to racial inequalities within policy and practice that are still being dealt with today. The First Step Act of 2018 (Formerly Incarcerated Reenter Society Transformed, Safely Transitioning Every Person Act) is a federal prison reform attempting to implement rehabilitative social change within a society that is still not ready for it. Innovation has been lauded over centuries but the emergence of an "innovation policy paradigm" is a new phenomenon, producing profound changes in the realm of scientific research. Whether these changes stand to benefit 'all' Canadians remains to be seen. Therein lies a problem: The present "innovation policy paradigm" trades on society's deeply entrenched view of innovation (however it occurs) as a public good, while simultaneously encoding for specific a 'brand' of innovation that privileges capital over all other interests.
