Problem-Based Learning: An Attitudinal Study Of Police Academy Students, Gregory P. Vander Kooi Dec 2006

Problem-Based Learning: An Attitudinal Study Of Police Academy Students, Gregory P. Vander Kooi

Dissertations

Policing strategies have gravitated toward a consensus paradigm model, commonly referred to as "community policing." This is a significant paradigm shift, yet most police academies continue to use traditional lecture-based pedagogical methods to train police officers. One possible alternative to passive lecture-based teaching is a more active problem-based learning. Problem-based methodologies consist of presenting ill-structured problems whereby an instructor facilitates and directs the students in active inquiry toward possible solutions for a specific problem.

Best Practices Within Mediation Programs, Warren L. Hills Dec 2006

Best Practices Within Mediation Programs, Warren L. Hills

Dissertations

Mediation Centers have been introduced to college and university campuses in recent years as a cost effective method to deal with a variety of conflict issues. These centers offer a variety of services to students, faculty, and staff including mediation, facilitation, and training. Campus mediation centers that report various levels of success and growth serve as an example for operations to their peer institutions. Yet for a lack of previous research, little information is known about the actual operations of campus mediation centers and the systems and processes they follow.

An internet-based survey was sent to campus mediation centers staff …

How Does The Political Nature Of The Defense Acquisition Process Affect Cost Growth, Nikolaos Gounatidis Sep 2006

How Does The Political Nature Of The Defense Acquisition Process Affect Cost Growth, Nikolaos Gounatidis

Theses and Dissertations

Many of the major programs of the DoD are experiencing cost growth. This research developed an empirical model in order to explain cost overruns. This thesis sought to discover relationships between cost overruns and factors that originate from the political nature of the defense acquisition process. The model describes how the political and legislative balances of power between the parties of the Congress, the change of the purchase habits of the DoD from production to service contracts, and the spreading of defense manufacturing capacity across the U.S are related to cost overruns. This research studied 193 programs from 1970 to …

Policy Analysis Of The Victim Offender Restitution Program, Veronica Damon, Marie Bostick, Lamont Mcgary

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Both the criminal justice and the juvenile justice systems have experienced increased strain due to criminal acts committed by juveniles. Many experts suggest that one way to ease the burden of the courts can be found in the theory of restorative justice. Most often the juvenile justice system is most concerned with the risk and needs of youthful offenders without significant consideration for the victims. A key component in the restorative justice theory is victim offender mediation which seeks to reduce the impact of crime on victims and the community. Clark County, Nevada has one such program, the Victim Offender …

Use And Effectiveness Of Contract Schedule Incentives In Air Force Materiel Command, Rodrick A. Koch Jun 2006

Use And Effectiveness Of Contract Schedule Incentives In Air Force Materiel Command, Rodrick A. Koch

Theses and Dissertations

Are contract schedule incentives utilized by our acquisition contracting workforce, and if so what are their effectiveness? This research shows there is not widespread use of these types of incentives. There is also disagreement on their perceived effectiveness. Surveying, via email, the population of contracting officers and buyers within Air Force Materiel Command yielded responses from every center and many large acquisition systems. Only 8.5% of responses showed that they use schedule incentives. These respondents claim that schedule incentives are somewhat effective, yet of the 91.5 % that have not used them, 2-to-l say they would not be effective. The …

However Long The Journey, Our Destination Is Set: Liberty And Justice For All: Dealing With The Issue Of Slavery And Involuntary Servitude In The United States, Felicia Janelle Lindsey

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this paper is to determine how Americans are to achieve justice for the descendents of slavery and survivors of involuntary servitude. Some of the concepts and models that will be used to make such a determination include transitional justice, pertinent United States documents that have rooted the ideals of justice in American society, and truth and reconciliation commissions. In addition to discussing why truth and reconciliation commissions are used today, two examples will be cited that highlight the reasons these processes will not work in an American social political context. Finally, a truth and reconciliation model that …

Adversarial Or Inquisitorial: Which Approach Is Closer To Arbitration?, Ahmed Galal Zaki

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Adversarial techniques such as pre-trial discovery of documents, cross-examination, and lengthy oral pleadings are now in vogue in the conduct of international commercial arbitration proceedings. This paper responds to this trend by analyzing both the adversarial and the inquisitorial systems in an attempt to demonstrate which is more fulfilling to the objectives of international commercial arbitration. These objectives are party autonomy, neutrality, efficiency, flexibility, and confidentiality. In the finale, the paper provides that although the adversarial system is in line with the autonomy rights of those who opt for arbitration, its inquisitorial counterpart is more neutral, efficient, flexible, and confidential. …

The Good Governance Agenda Of International Development Institutions, Kerry L. Hofheimer Apr 2006

The Good Governance Agenda Of International Development Institutions, Kerry L. Hofheimer

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

International development institutions (IDIs) have increasingly emphasized good governance and democratic reform in the provision of foreign assistance. This is especially apparent with respect to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Bank, European Union (EU), and United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This project describes and explains the good governance and democracy promotion program of each institution.

Previous studies have accounted for IDIs' good governance and democracy promotion in the 1990s in a generalized way. They have taken into consideration external international changes such as the fading of the Cold War and increased global interdependence between the North …

The Law Of The World Trade Organization And Its Domestic Implementation: With Special Reference To The People's Republic Of China, Hongliu Gong

Theses and Dissertations

On January 15, 1995, a new international economic organization came into being. The creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO), of which the tenth anniversary recently passed, marks "a watershed moment for the institutions of world economic relations reflected in the Bretton Wood system." Through a decade of existence, the WTO has grown into a "common institutional framework for the conduct of trade relations," serving to "develop an integrated, more viable and durable multilateral trading system."

Like many international economic organizations that emerged after World War II, the WTO is a treaty-established inter-governmental institution. "Treaties are often an awkward albeit …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Copyright Law Of The Kingdom Of Thailand And The Copyright Law Of The United States Of America : Within The Context Of International Trade, Sutee Iamcharoenying

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past twenty years, the Kingdom of Thailand's role in international trade has considerably increased. Concurrently, Thailand has been rapidly absorbing and utilizing advanced technology from the developed countries. Along with these favorable consequences, have come concerns regarding intellectual property protection. In fact, intellectual property matters have become one of the focal concerns for the United States, Thailand's most important trading partner. The United States has proclaimed that, to compete with other players in the world, Thailand must develop a sound copyright law reform to sustain its socio-economic development.

The fact that international copyright norms have been evolving may …
