A Review Of The 2022/23 International Moots Season, Siyuan Chen

This is the ninth annual review of Singapore’s performance in international moot court competitions. The preceding season (2021/22) had set a high bar, considering that Singapore law schools took the top two spots in the NICA Law School Rankings. The NICA rankings are based on how law schools throughout the world perform in various international moots, with points weighted according to the scale of the competition. With six championships (including two Grand Slams) as well as a third championship final appearance in the Jessup, SMU took top spot in the NICA rankings for the second time in its history.

Singapore Management University (SMU) today celebrated the official opening of its new School of Law building and the Kwa Geok Choo Law Library. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was the Guest-of-Honour at the ceremony, which was attended by 800 distinguished guests, donors, faculty, students, and SMU’s partners in the legal fraternity. Completed in December 2016, the new School of Law building now stands as a distinctive landmark at the junction of Armenian Street and Stamford Road/Fort Canning Link. First, the opening of the SMU School of Law Building also commemorates the 10th anniversary of the School’s establishment in 2007. Second, with this building SMU is returning to its roots – this site was where the original SMU was to have been built, and for which the old National Library was demolished some 15 years ago. And third, being now adjacent to Fort Canning Park creates new impetus for SMU’s 10,000-plus students to engage more meaningfully with this historic location, and to give it more life and vibrancy than hitherto.

The Singapore Management University (SMU) announced today that it has appointed Associate Professor Goh Yihan as the new Dean of the SMU School of Law (SOL), following an extensive and rigorous global search that started in September 2016. Associate Professor Goh, who is currently the Associate Dean (Research) at SOL, will succeed Professor Yeo Tiong Min S.C. (Hon) as Dean of SOL from 1 July 2017 for a five-year term. Professor Yeo will remain in the law school as Yong Pung How Chair Professor of Law after standing down from his role as Dean.

As law firm internships provide law students with their first substantial encounters with lawyers, in situations where they are especially eager to impress, a project was undertaken to examine the impact of private law firm internships on the professional identities of future lawyers. Fifty-two volunteers from the Singapore Management University, which mandates 10 weeks of internships with approved partners, were surveyed. Most had done corporate or civil litigation work at local firms in Singapore. The findings of this research project were presented at the fifth International Legal Ethics Conference, held in Canada in July.
