Climate Impact Screening And Reporting: A Venture Capital Perspective, Ajay S. Jagdish, Perrine Toledano, Ana M. Camelo Vega

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment

According to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Net-Zero Scenario, about one-third of the emissions reductions needed by 2050 depend on technologies that are currently in development. Additionally, climate adaptation finance faces an even larger investment gap.

The Climate Venture Capital community must demonstrate tangible climate impact to truly earn its reputation.

However, accurately and reliably screening, evaluating, and monitoring climate impact is challenging, with many metrics and methods still needing to be ascertained, clarified, and standardized.

With the support of Princeville Capital, CCSI offers insights into unresolved issues:

  1. Attribution and baselining
  2. Paris-aligned thresholds for prioritization
  3. Indirect impact and tailored KPIs …

Offshore oil and gas infrastructure faces an existential threat: the increasingly pressing need to address the climate emergency. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change projects that GHG emissions from existing and planned fossil fuel infrastructure will push global warming past the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C threshold, and more detailed projections estimate that “nearly 60 per cent of oil and fossil methane gas ... must remain unextracted to keep within a 1.5 °C carbon budget.” The growing urgency of climate action, coupled with the increasing adoption of renewable energy systems and energy-efficient technologies, may strand thousands of offshore oil and gas installations …

To further and fully understand how to plan for the decarbonization of mining value chains, we need better data on carbon and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, neither consumers, corporates, or financial institutions know the embodied emissions in the products they produce or sell. While methods like life-cycle analysis and environmental product declarations exist, none use a verifiable, comparable, or widely adopted emissions reporting framework capable of sending supply chain signals.

To truly reform material supply chains, new solutions for markets, capital, and policy are required. COMET (the Coalition on Materials Emissions Transparency) – an alliance launched at Davos …

This report, commissioned by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), describes the nexus between climate change, environmental degradation, and the impairment of fundamental human rights, such as the rights to food, water, housing, and life. It explains how governments and other actors can address climate change in a manner consistent with their obligations to respect, protect, promote and fulfill human rights. The report was released during COP21 to help inform the development of the Paris Agreement.
