Closing The Feedback Gap: Reflections As Diagnostic Resource, Jaclyn Celebrezze

Providing students with helpful, actionable feedback is a perennial challenge. This presentation identifies an additional data source for instructors when drafting feedback: digital student reflections. This process has a dual benefit for both instructors and students. For instructors, digitized reflections unlock an understanding of why a student drafted a certain way, minimizing guesswork and ensuring more targeted feedback. For students, this process directs the instructor’s gaze to a concrete concern or discomfort for immediate response. While not a solution for all feedback problems, digitizing student reflections allows instructors and students to work together to close the gap.

This concurrent session provided an overview of how Tribes are working to combat the ever present threat of climate change and the move toward increasing Tribal-co management of lands and waters throughout the country. The session included a discussion of the Department of the Interior’s work to implement Secretarial Order 3403 on Fulfilling the Trust Responsibility to Indian Tribes in the Stewardship of Federal Lands and Waters.

Section 230(c)(1) was adopted for the purpose of distinguishing between conduct of third parties and conduct of internet companies themselves. Its familiar language provides that “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.” The last four words are central to the limitation on the defense created by the statute; it is only regarding information created by “another” that the defense may be available. Research for over 50 years on the experience of students and teachers supports the use of therapeutic principles to promote a classroom space that fosters cooperation, interaction, diversity, and responsibility. By understanding communication, social interactions, and cognition principles, teachers teach more effectively and students learn more easily. The converse is true, however. Poor communication, assumptions, lack of mindfulness, or fixed mindsets all lead to lack of motivation, poor teaching, and poor learning. Unlike school teachers, most law professors do not have any training with these psychological principles. Thus, legal teaching can be rigid, competitive, harsh, and ill-suited to students facing …

In my research on daylight saving time (DST), I have found that Americans don’t like it when Congress messes with their clocks. In an effort to avoid the biannual clock switch in spring and fall, some well-intended critics of DST have made the mistake of suggesting that the abolition of DST (and a return to permanent standard time) would benefit society. They are wrong. DST saves lives and energy, and prevents crime. Congress should move the country to year-round DST, and if it did so, here are five ways our lives would immediately improve.

Tools included Kanbanflow, Google Suite, Trello, Slack, Moleskin Journey, and Voice Notes. From online embeds to interactive displays, timelines can serve many purposes and tell powerful stories. In this panel librarians discuss collaboration and how to bring history to life through displays, events and online platforms for engaging students and preserving community milestones. Four of our favorite tools for creating digital timelines and gathering content will be shared including Prezi, TikiToki, TimeToast, and Piktochart. Comparisons will be given based on cost, technical limitations, and general ease of use. Specific examples will also be shared and discussed.
