Piety And Profession: Simon Greenleaf And The Case Of The Stillborn Bowdoin Law School, 1850–1861, Alfred S. Konefsky

Journal Articles

In 1850, Bowdoin College turned to former Harvard professor Simon Greenleaf when it sought to establish a law school. Although the school did not materialize, Greenleaf wrote a remarkable report that reveals anxieties about the profession, competing visions of legal education, and controversies over the meaning of the science of law in antebellum New England.

Reforming Legal Education: Law Schools At The Crossroads, Debra Curtis, David Moss Nov 2012

Reforming Legal Education: Law Schools At The Crossroads, Debra Curtis, David Moss

Faculty Scholarship

In today's volatile law school environment, curriculum reform has emerged as a significant focus. It is commonly understood that law schools effectively teach certain analytical skills, but are less successful in other areas, and often scramble to adapt to evolving aims. This book demonstrates how law schools are successfully reforming their curriculum - and lays the framework to show how all schools of law can engage in a continuous reform model that proactively shapes our profession. It is expected that faculty and professional staff engaged in legal education will utilize this book as a primary resource to guide their respective …

Take An Active Role In Improving Legal Education, Wes R. Porter

As a law professor, catching up with classes, scholarship, and other work after a conference is always challenging. Last month, I returned to San Francisco from the first gathering of the previously-only-virtual community connected through the Educating Tomorrow’s Lawyers Initiative (ETL) and website. ETL, through a conference entitled "The Development of Professional Identity in Legal Education," brought together teams from its consortium schools, its ETL fellows, and many other legal education reform advocates. Upon my return, I was confronted with yet another demand on my time (and on my brain). Ideas. Many, many ideas.

The Law School Critique In Historical Perspective, A. Benjamin Spencer Oct 2012

The Law School Critique In Historical Perspective, A. Benjamin Spencer

Faculty Publications

Contemporary critiques of legal education abound. This arises from what can be described as a perfect storm: the confluence of softness in the legal employment market, the skyrocketing costs of law school, and the unwillingness of clients and law firms to continue subsidizing the further training of lawyers who failed to learn how to practice in law school. As legal jobs become increasingly scarce and salaries stagnate, the value proposition of law school is rightly being questioned from all directions. Although numerous valid criticisms have been put forth, some seem to be untethered from a full appreciation for how the …

Not Your Parents' Law Library: A Tale Of Two Academic Law Libraries, Julian Aiken, Femi Cadmus, Fred Shapiro

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

As academic law libraries continue to face the inevitability of a rapidly changing landscape which includes a new breed of digital users with sophisticated technological needs, it remains to be seen what libraries will look like in years to come. It is certain that libraries as we know them today will have changed, but to what extent? An ability to remain adaptable and to anticipate the evolving needs of users in a dynamic environment will continue to be key for libraries to remain relevant, and even to survive, in the 21st century; vital to this endeavor will also be an …

Use Of Role Play And Interview Modes In Law Clinic Case Rounds To Teach Essential Legal Skills And To Maximize Meaningful Participation, Helen Kang

Publications

Case rounds are a common feature of the seminar component of clinical programs. This article describes using in the case rounds setting multiple design elements, including role plays and formalized interviews, to enhance student learning and engagement. In the rounds described here, a student presenter is asked to adopt the role of her opponent in her clinic case and to explain succinctly the opponent's case, followed by an informational session in which the student presenter is allowed only to give short answers in response to questions from her clinic peers; and after the question-and-answer session, students and their professors debrief …

Critical Review Examination System (Cres) Computer Assisted Student Self-Critique Of Essay Question Answers, David S. Bogen Oct 2012

Critical Review Examination System (Cres) Computer Assisted Student Self-Critique Of Essay Question Answers, David S. Bogen

Faculty Scholarship

This paper discusses the Critical Review Exam System [CRES] developed by Alan Tyree in Australia in which the computer poses a question requiring an essay answer. After the student answer has been "submitted," the computer asks the student a number of simple yes/no questions about the submitted answer. In effect, students mark their own answer. The "critical review" questions may be arranged in a tree structure, thus facilitating the use of questions which have no "right" answer.
