Hess V. Indiana Revisited: A Panel Discussion With Case Participants (Video), Ralph F. Gaebler, Richard Vaughan

On November 19th, 2004, a panel discussion was held in the Moot Court Room of the Indiana University-Bloomington School of Law. The topic of the discussion was the landmark United States Supreme Court case, Hess v. Indiana. The case is particularly relevant to the law school because two members of the faculty (Tom Schornhorst and Pat Baude) served as lawyers to the defendant Greg Hess. Additionally, the protest and arrest took place half a block from the law school in front of the University's administration building (Bryan Hall) in 1970.

Institute Brief: Making Experiential Education Accessible For Students With Disabilities, Cynthia Zafft, Sara Sezun, Melanie Jordan

The Institute Brief Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

College students with disabilities enter with less work experience and have a harder time finding jobs than their nondisabled peers. Experiential education-- mentoring, internships, job shadowing, and so on-- can create a bridge to graduation and employment. However, that requires college professionals to consider access issues for all students. A new Institute Brief provides basic disability awareness information, suggests ways to create welcoming career offices, and offers ideas to increase access to experiential education.

It has been over a quarter century since the Carter administration set a goal of increasing the number of women working in the construction industry to 6.9% of the workforce. It is often overlooked that the stated intent of this policy initiative was for women to make up 25% of construction workers by the year 2000 (Eisenberg, 1999). While some isolated projects have met or exceeded the 6.9% target, the number of women working in the construction trades nationally increased in the first few years after 1979, but leveled off at under 3% in the early 1980’s and has stayed …

In 2001, a roundtable on gender disparities for female professors in higher education was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The focus of the roundtable was "how best to ensure women professors experience the same opportunities, recognition and rewards as their male counterparts." Some three years later, a few faculty members from various disciplines weigh in with various perspectives on the current state of the gender gap.

The American Democratic Tradition & The Quest For Access & Equity In Higher Education: The Browns And Blues Of Social Change, Amilcar Shabazz

Afro-American Studies Faculty Publication Series

In this lecture I revisit the meaning of the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision and the legal and social struggles that led to the ruling and its consequences especially in the area of higher educational opportunity. I develop the idea of the American Democratic Tradition not as a fossilized ideal but as a contested terrain. The Brown decision and the blues of social change as a protracted, continuous process of struggle is the moment I am trying to render here in this lecture.

American University Washington College of Law's Human Rights Brief is an important educational tool for all of us and is a tremendous source for those involved in human rights work around the world. The Brief promotes the development of human rights by providing both analysis and information about cutting edge cases involving human rights violations today. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Brief, I will reflect on what I perceive to be the changes necessary for legal education and discuss the role of human rights in that process.

t is often said that being a professor is the best job and being a department head or chair is the toughest job in an academic institution. This observation stems from the fact that, particularly in U.S. research universities, faculty members have considerable freedom, outside of assigned teaching and service duties, to manage their own time and scholarly effort and directions. Law Faculty Scholarship

Assessment is crucial to effective teaching and learning. Carnegie's Educating Lawyers and Roy Stuckey's Best Practices for Legal Education emphasize the importance of assessment. This article explains how detailed, written grading criteria describing what students should learn and how they will be evaluated should be a central part of law teachers' assessment plans. The article details how rubrics can improve law student learning, and contains both detailed, step-by-step directions on creating rubrics and examples of rubrics from many different law school courses.

The dearth of statistical or anecdotal evidence aside, combined with the relative lack of reported litigation, it appears that most students and teachers regularly participate in perhaps the most common daily school ritual by joining in the patriotic recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance (Pledge) and the salute to the American Flag. Yet, as discussed throughout this article, this daily practice has had a history of controversy, whether in schools or political settings.
