One of the most significant developments in civil rights litigation is the expansion of immunity doctrines. Even though immunity is not mentioned in 42 U.S.C. ยง 1983, the United States Supreme Court has given some governmental officials the benefit of a qualified immunity from damages, and other officials an absolute immunity from damages.
