On June 22, 2009, after twenty-six years as the Executive Director of the Major League Baseball Players’ Association (MLBPA), seminal labor leader Donald Fehr announced his retirement. Fehr’s tenure at the MLBPA was marked by extreme highs – the average player salary increased from $241,000 to over $3 million – and lows – the cancellation of the 1994 World Series after the players went out on strike.

Shortly after announcing his retirement from the MLBPA, Fehr agreed to assist the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) in revamping its constitution and finding a new executive director. For much of its …
