A Comparative Approach To Coordination: How Apes, Monkeys And Humans Respond To An Assurance Game With Equivalent Procedures, Bart Wilson, Sarah Brosnan Aug 2014

A Comparative Approach To Coordination: How Apes, Monkeys And Humans Respond To An Assurance Game With Equivalent Procedures, Bart Wilson, Sarah Brosnan

Bart J Wilson

Our research directly compares coordinated decision making across the entire primate lineage, including a new-world monkey, an old-world monkey, an ape, and humans, to help understand how decision making is different between these species. We find that the ability to coordinate on a mutually beneficial decision does vary across species, that there is variability within each taxonomic group, and that this variation overlaps between groups. Each species represents a continuum, with pairs of each species ranging from random outcomes to those which coordinate on the payoff dominant outcome. What differs is the frequency of payoff dominant outcomes within each species.

An Experiment On Protecting Intellectual Property, Bart Wilson Aug 2014

An Experiment On Protecting Intellectual Property, Bart Wilson

Bart J Wilson

We conduct a laboratory experiment to explore whether the protection of intellectual property (IP) incentivizes people to create non-rivalrous knowledge goods, foregoing the production of other rivalrous goods. In the contrasting treatment with no IP protection, participants are free to resell and remake non-rivalrous knowledge goods originally created by others. We find that creators reap substantial profits when IP is protected and that rampant pirating is not uncommon when there is no IP protection. But most importantly, we find that IP protection in and of itself is neither necessary nor sufficient for generating wealth from the discovery of knowledge goods.

When Rights Become Empty Promises: Promoting An Exclusionary Rule That Vindicates Personal Rights, Robert Bloom, Erin Dewey Oct 2013

When Rights Become Empty Promises: Promoting An Exclusionary Rule That Vindicates Personal Rights, Robert Bloom, Erin Dewey

Robert Bloom

The United States has played a leading role in the development of the exclusionary rule since Weeks v. United States (1914). The original exclusionary rule justification set out in Weeks is the vindication principle which operates so as to exclude unconstitutionally obtained evidence for the purpose of vindicating the rights of the accused. In this way the exclusion of evidence provides a remedy to the victim of an illegality by maintaining the status quo ante. The U.S. Supreme Court observed in Wolf v Colorado (1949) that “[o]f 10 jurisdictions within the United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth of Nations which …

Between Myths And Reality--Macedonia Between Turkey And The European Union, Marija Đorđeska Dec 2011

Between Myths And Reality--Macedonia Between Turkey And The European Union, Marija Đorđeska

Dr Marija Dordeska

The spirit of Alexander the Great still stirs ghosts between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia. Macedonia is on its way to the EU and Greece represents an obstacle for these processes in the aftermath of the name dispute and the Greek veto on the Macedonian membership in NATO and the European Union. The major asset Greece has in regards to Macedonia is the veto power over the future accession talks Macedonia could have with international organizations, especially with the European Union. Instead of Greece taking Macedonia under its wing, Macedonia continues to be perceived as a threat to Greek …

Juvenile Diversion Programs, Robert Marsh, Steven Patrick Dec 2011

Juvenile Diversion Programs, Robert Marsh, Steven Patrick

Robert L. Marsh

The dilemma of dealing with youth culture has been an age-old cultural concern. The process of socializing the young and dealing with their positive and negative behaviors has concerned societies and governments as diverse as the ancient Romans and Greeks and modern Americans. In the American colonies, children occupied a low status and, as such, were treated harshly. Societies have employed a number of methods to control and teach correct behavior to the young. Most policies concentrated on some type of punishment. The public policies for youthful misbehavior in both England and its former colonies often included trial in an …

Simulating Correctional Disturbances: The Application Of Organization Control Theories To Correctional Organizations Via Computer Simulation, Steven Patrick, Patricia Dorman, Robert Marsh Dec 2011

Simulating Correctional Disturbances: The Application Of Organization Control Theories To Correctional Organizations Via Computer Simulation, Steven Patrick, Patricia Dorman, Robert Marsh

Robert L. Marsh

Inmate group behavior is a complex phenomenon that many researchers have attempted to understand. Most of the individual theories applied to this issue have had limited success. This work uses computer simulation to apply a complex theory of organizational control to the issue of inmate group behavior that incorporates all the major theoretical components found in the individual theories. The complete theory is first presented and then basic simulation results are discussed. The findings show that the simulated theory produced results that are empirically realistic. The control processes used by prisons generally produce compliance from inmates but these same control …

Constitutional Law: Cases, History, And Dialogues, 3rd Edition, William Araiza, Phoebe Haddon, Dorothy Roberts Nov 2011

Constitutional Law: Cases, History, And Dialogues, 3rd Edition, William Araiza, Phoebe Haddon, Dorothy Roberts

Phoebe A. Haddon

One of this book's distinguishing features is its series of Dialogues in which the authors debate issues relevant to the cases. In the Dialogues the authors engage both each other and the cases, and in doing so reveal their own and the Justices' methodological, ideological, and policy assumptions. Students benefit from having this information as they form their own opinions about the doctrine. The Dialogues also provide a starting point for more insightful class discussions, by presenting the material in the context of the authors' viewpoints.

Marine Resources Management, Warwick Gullett, Clive Schofield, Joanna Vince Nov 2011

Marine Resources Management, Warwick Gullett, Clive Schofield, Joanna Vince

Warwick Gullett

The idea for this book came from a realisation that although the marine resources in Australia's large offshore areas are varied, valuable and of increasing national significance, these points are often poorly acknowledged and understood. Further, it was apparent to us that a clear understanding of the challenges that arise for the management of Australia's marine environment cannot be achieved without appreciating the complexities and cross-cutting nature of the activities and issues involved. This means that a broad scale perspective is required; one that is informed by contributions from a range of disciplines. Unfortunately, students, scholars and practitioners typically find …

Advancing Maritime Australia, Warwick Gullett, Clive Schofield, Joanna Vince Nov 2011

Advancing Maritime Australia, Warwick Gullett, Clive Schofield, Joanna Vince

Warwick Gullett

According to the Australian Institute of Marine Science Index of Marine Industry, Australia is 'one of the great marine nations of the world' with the 'potential to become an oceanic superpower'. This assessment is based on the size of Australia's marine jurisdiction, the extent and variety of the resources within it, and the strength and economic contribution of Australia's marine industries. It is easy to agree with this positive assessment. Part B of this book explains the vast geographical extent of Australia's marine jurisdiction, as well as Australia's rights and responsibilities within this area, and outlines its resources and their …

Australia's Marine Jurisdictions Under International And Domestic Law, Warwick Gullett, G. Rose Nov 2011

Australia's Marine Jurisdictions Under International And Domestic Law, Warwick Gullett, G. Rose

Warwick Gullett

This chapter explains Australia's international maritime zones and domestic marine jurisdictions in order to understand the nature and geographical operation of laws that apply in Australian waters. The task of determining the type of laws that can operate in Australian waters, as well as the geographical extent of those laws, is particularly difficult because Australia is a federation. In addition to authorising the Australian Parliament to make certain laws offshore, the Australian Constitution also enables the state parliaments to regulate some offshore activities. It is helpful if these laws are spatially defined so that people can know which laws apply …
