So many legal materials are in languages other than English worldwide, that it is inevitable that most of us will need to find or access one of these documents at some point. The slideshow is the basis for seven short "flipped-classroom"-style videos on six ways to find cases relevant to a client's problem or issue. The slideshow covers these six tools and techniques for finding cases: secondary sources; annotated codes; tables of authorities; Shepard's and KeyCite; the West Key Number System (the West Digests); and full-text keyword searching of case law databases. It is accompanied by a brief overview (in Word format), which is also available via my Selected Works site.

Setback regulations often require that all buildings be a certain amount of feet (usually about 25-50 feet from the street).  As a result of these zoning rules, all destinations outside the most urban areas have to place either parking or useless green spaces between the street and a store, office building or residence.
 
I argue that these regulations make walking more difficult, for four reasons.  First, pedestrians have to waste time walking through these empty spaces.  Second, walking through a sea of parking is simply no fun.  Pedestrians tend to enjoy shade and a sense of enclosure, so they …

Equity is a word that gets thrown around often in economic development. Terms such as equitable development, regional equity, and equitable growth all too often become little more than rhetorical intent concerning development initiatives, as opposed to a principle of practice. Historically, women, the disabled, indigenous peoples, Blacks, and other people of color have meaningfully been left out of the development process. All the while, normative pro-growth economic development strategies have affected minority and marginalized communities differently, largely producing inequitable outcomes that shape the experiences and hardships of those outside of the towers of power. Open access within legal academia provides a case study for the effective use of digital formats to promote scholarship. The presenters review the background historical developments in this field, and consider the benefits and rationales for providing open access to legal scholarship, including the special faculty concerns arising from SSRN and its relationship to the institutional repository. Results from the presenters’ recent empirical study of the citation advantage for open access scholarship in American law reviews will be discussed and placed in broader context of the benefits of open access scholarship.

Formulating a Best Practice Statement for Prison Parenting Programs Purpose: The purpose of this undergraduate honors project was to critically analyze available research on parenting, parenting education, incarcerated parents, and outcomes for the children of incarcerated parents, and make recommendations to a correctional facility for best practices. Background: Over 1.7 million American children have one or more incarcerated parents. These children are at high risk of depression, aggression, and intergenerational incarceration. Many incarcerated men have a limited understanding of parenting and fatherhood. This presentation on The Corporate Shell Game identifies for the first time the hardening of the corporate shell. It provides compelling evidence that shell-hardening pushes and disguises the way that corporations and agents commit large-scale wrongdoing, and it traces the contributing legal streams that protect the agents who engage in this behavior. The only way to combat widespread frauds that inflict damage on the public is for the corporate shell to become less opaque.
