The oil and gas extraction technique called hydraulic fracturing (i.e. fracing, fracking, hydrofracking) is sweeping the country. Citizens in both urban and suburban neighborhoods are increasingly coming into close contact with oil and gas operations. Amidst untenable allegations from popular media and environmentalists that fracking is poisoning underground water aquifers, polluting the air, and causing earthquakes; state policymakers are dealing with an increasing amount of local governments reacting to the mass paranoia. Through enacting ordinances either restricting or banning fracking, or enacting outright bans on all oil and gas development within their municipality; local governments are pushing their police powers …
