Those of you who enjoy Gilbert and Sullivan recall, no doubt, the Lord Chancellor's appraisal of the law in "Iolanthe," "The law is the true embodiment of everything that is excellent, it has no kind of fault or flaw, and I, my lords, embody the law." Those of you who enjoy Dickens may also recall that one of his characters, Mr. Bumble, summed it all up by the expression, "The law is an ass."
