The FDA does not conduct pre-market review of chemicals contained in cosmetics—which encompasses not only makeup but also numerous personal care products including shampoo, lotion, perfume, aftershave, and shaving cream. Every day, consumers use cosmetic products that contain a variety of synthetic ingredients, none of which the FDA has approved for safety but each of which are being ingested, absorbed, and inhaled into our bodies and accumulating in our tissue. Many of these products contain endocrine disrupting chemicals (“EDCs”), which emerging research links to an increased risk of cancer as well as immune and neurological dysfunction. This article explores these lax regulatory efforts and their connection to risk assessment, and proposes changes to our current toxics regulatory paradigm. Part I of this article explores our current regulatory approach for consumer cosmetics. Part II discusses the specific and dire concerns regarding chemicals that are suspected carcinogens and those suspected of disrupting the human endocrine system. Searching For The Nano-Needle In A Green Haystack: Researching The Environmental, Health, And Safety Ramifications Of Nanotechnology, Taryn L. Rucinski

This Article will attempt to serve as a primer by demystifying the process of how to efficiently locate resources discussing the environmental health and safety (EHS) impacts of nanotechnology in the United States (U.S.). Part I of this Article begins with an examination of basic strategies for conducting research in the EHS nanotech field. Part II focuses on traditional legal resources such as texts, treatises, encyclopedias, as well as law review and journal articles. Part III examines such non-legal resources as reports, scientific studies, internet sites and other current awareness services. This last section is followed by a brief conclusion.
