Bolstering The Asian American Law Library Collection: A Collection Development Guide, Mari Cheney, Mandy Lee, Anna Lawless-Collins

An increase in Asian American hate crimes has compelled law librarians to consider their collection development decisions due to a gap in Asian American law library collections. Guidance for increasing Asian American–related materials, however, is sparse. This article aims to fill this gap by discussing the importance of representation, tips on how to perform a diversity audit, and suggestions for Asian American law-related titles.

In Voices Across the Spectrum, our goal is to explore issues, perspectives, and resources that focus on promoting diversity, equality, anti-racism, LGBTQ rights, multicultural outreach and recruitment into the profession, inclusive workplaces, and more. While the first installments of this new column will focus on systemic racism issues, each column will examine different diversity and inclusion issues to help prompt conversations and break down silos within the profession.

Soft Skills - The Importance Of Cultivating Emotional Intelligence, Ronald E. Wheeler

Organizations hire people for their hard skills, but they end up firing people for their lack of soft skills. In this brief essay, Professor Wheeler, an experienced law library director and personnel manager, discusses soft skills and their importance in the workplace. He posits that emotional intelligence is the basis of what we commonly call soft skills, and although for some these skills are innate, they can be developed and sharpened over time. Wheeler uses personal anecdotes to illustrate how emotional intelligence has enhanced his own professional life.

Professor Wheeler discusses the police killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. He posits that racialized fear is part of what fuels such violence and discusses examples of how racialized fear have impacted his personal life. Wheeler then discusses how and why law librarians can and should be prepared to discuss such events with their law library patrons.

The authors discuss successful hiring practices in academic law libraries. Their discussion details each step of the hiring process, from vacancy to offer, and explores strategies for implementing the steps successfully. The processes examined include: reviewing the vacancy, assessing the library needs, forming an effective search committee, writing a winning job description, checking references, conducting an interview, and making an offer. The authors assert that a successful hire will influence every aspect of your library and, as such, a library needs to devote considerable attention and resources to librarian searches.
