Practice Makes Perfect – Or At Least Better!, Joshua Levine

This fall, I will teach my third semester of Advanced Legal Research at Cardozo School of Law. With the support of the library, I have learned a great deal about how to teach effectively over the past year. They gave me the opportunity to conduct a mock ALR class this summer, which helped me tremendously. In this post, I will describe my journey as a new adjunct professor.

Improving Ethics Surrounding Collegiate-Level Hacking Education: Recommended Implementation Plan & Affiliation With Peer-Led Initiatives, Shannon Morgan, Dr. Sanjay Goel

Military Cyber Affairs

Cybersecurity has become a pertinent concern, as novel technological innovations create opportunities for threat actors to exfiltrate sensitive data. To meet the demand for professionals in the workforce, universities have ramped up their academic offerings to provide a broad range of cyber-related programs (e.g., cybersecurity, informatics, information technology, digital forensics, computer science, & engineering). As the tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) of hackers evolve, the knowledge and skillset required to be an effective cybersecurity professional have escalated accordingly. Therefore, it is critical to train cyber students both technically and theoretically to actively combat cyber criminals and protect the confidentiality, integrity, …

The Seminar Paper Topics Graveyard, Olivia Smith Schlinck Apr 2024

The Seminar Paper Topics Graveyard, Olivia Smith Schlinck

Library Staff Online Publications

I often teach one-off academic research instruction sessions for law students, for either those working on a journal or those in a writing seminar.

My approach to these sessions is relatively standard—demonstrate the sources and strategies for academic legal research—but tailored to the individual needs and overall topic of each course. One of my favorite ways to personalize a session is to demonstrate the research process using a topic that matches the class itself. A “fake paper,” if you will.

Doing Less—Reflections On Cognitive Load And Hard Choices In Teaching First-Year Legal Writing, Ellie Margolis Jan 2024

Doing Less—Reflections On Cognitive Load And Hard Choices In Teaching First-Year Legal Writing, Ellie Margolis

Saint Louis University Law Journal

The evolving landscape of legal research and writing (LRW) education requires LRW professors to balance a multitude of expectations and demands in the process of teaching foundational skills and ensuring that students are “practice-ready.” This essay argues that attempting to cover too wide an array of skills and competencies often leads to ineffective learning outcomes and suggests that a “less is more” approach may be more beneficial. It explores the challenges faced by LRW professors in teaching a comprehensive set of skills while ensuring students can transfer their learning to new contexts. Drawing on research and personal teaching experiences, the …

Teaching And Learning About Implicit Bias In The Legal Practice Classroom: The Lesson Of Sandy Jordan, Anupama C. Connor Jan 2024

Teaching And Learning About Implicit Bias In The Legal Practice Classroom: The Lesson Of Sandy Jordan, Anupama C. Connor

Saint Louis University Law Journal

“Implicit bias” describes the unconscious stereotypes and attitudes that all humans have hard wired in their brains. It can go awry when we have implicit biases based on race or ethnicity that are unrealized and unfair. Gen Z students are famously diverse, and they are proud of their diversity, but they are also uncomfortable talking about sensitive topics, including implicit bias. Legal Practice professors are in a unique position to work with their Gen Z students to identify and eliminate implicit bias because of our year-long course and the interactive nature of our class. This article discusses how implicit bias …

Having Fun While Learning: Pedagogical Techniques For Teaching Contract Drafting, Robin Boyle Jan 2024

Having Fun While Learning: Pedagogical Techniques For Teaching Contract Drafting, Robin Boyle

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

Welcome everyone. Thank you very much for coming. It’s so exciting that we’re all together. I was looking forward to this conference. I’m Robin Boyle and I haven’t been here in a long time, unfortunately. So, it’s wonderful to come back and to see all of you.

My foray into contract drafting began about twenty years ago, when I started teaching Drafting Litigation Documents and Contracts (3 credits), which had a contract drafting component. The school also created a standalone Contract Drafting course (2 credits). The books that I’ve been using over the years have been very helpful. I …

The 80/20 Rule For Legal Research, Olivia Smith Schlinck Oct 2023

The 80/20 Rule For Legal Research, Olivia Smith Schlinck

Library Staff Online Publications

A few semesters ago I was discussing the value of secondary sources with a student when they paused to think, then described secondary sources as “kind of like the 80/20 Rule, but different.” I’d never heard of the 80/20 Rule, but I jotted it down onto a Post-It note to look into later. Fast-forward to today and I now introduce my students to what I’ve dubbed “the 80/20 Rule for Legal Research” in all classes about secondary sources.

Exploring The Influence Of School Location On School Resource Officers’ Perceptions Of Their Roles And Priorities, Larry A. Potts Jan 2023

Exploring The Influence Of School Location On School Resource Officers’ Perceptions Of Their Roles And Priorities, Larry A. Potts

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the widespread presence of school resource officers (SROs) in public schools for decades, their proper roles and priorities have remained unsettled because those roles are often varied, complex, conflicting, and ambiguous. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how SROs perceive their roles and priorities and whether school location influences those perceptions. Qualitative research methods provided opportunities for one-to-one interviews with SROs and their supervisors. Two elements embedded in the design consisted of a descriptive questionnaire provided to the SROs before their interviews, and a qualitative interview question designed to elicit a percentage estimate response from SROs. …

Lessons Learned In Prison, Daniel Keating Jan 2023

Lessons Learned In Prison, Daniel Keating

Scholarship@WashULaw

One way that I have tried to stay fresh as a teacher through the decades is to periodically force myself outside of my teaching comfort zone by trying something completely different. Sometimes these initiatives will end up being a one-time experiment. That was the case a little over ten years ago when I decided to teach a new course (Contracts) in a new format (online, but well before Zoom had become commonplace). Other times, my teaching experiment will prove to be more than just a frolic and detour, as was true eight years ago when I began offering a free …

Generation Z has entered law school. With each new generation comes new education preferences. While research on Gen Z in the legal academy has grown over the past few years, to date none deal explicitly with teaching legal research to Gen Z. This article connects Gen Z’s childhood and resulting peer personality to 10 tangible pedagogical changes for teaching legal research to Gen Z.
